What does an electrical engineer contractor do?

An Electrical Engineer Contractor is a professional who designs, installs, maintains, and supervises electrical systems on a contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee. They may work on projects such as building wiring, power distribution, lighting, and control systems for commercial, industrial, or residential clients. These contractors are responsible for ensuring all work complies with safety codes and client specifications, often collaborating with architects, project managers, and other engineers. Their role can also include troubleshooting electrical issues and providing cost estimates for projects.

What are some common challenges faced by electrical engineer contractors when managing multiple projects?

Electrical Engineer Contractors often juggle several projects simultaneously, which can present challenges such as coordinating schedules, ensuring compliance with varying client requirements, and adapting to different site conditions. Effective communication and time management are critical, as contractors must collaborate with clients, architects, and construction teams to keep projects on track. Additionally, staying updated on local codes and safety regulations is essential to prevent delays and maintain quality standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical engineer contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Engineer Contractor, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, project management, and relevant licensure such as a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Familiarity with CAD software, electrical design codes (like NEC), and project management tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and client management skills set exceptional contractors apart. These competencies ensure safe, compliant, and efficient project delivery, meeting client specifications and industry standards.

Job description

Job Title: Electrical Engineer Location: Houston, Texas Type: Direct Hire Compensation: $130,000 - $170,000 Contractor Work Model: Hybrid Hours: Monday - Friday, 8-5 Company Overview

A growing engineering and consulting firm is expanding their presence in the data center and mission-critical infrastructure space. Their team is focused on delivering high-quality electrical design and project execution across complex, large-scale environments.

As they continue to scale this practice, they are seeking individuals who thrive in a hands-on, entrepreneurial environment and want to play a meaningful role in building something from the ground up.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with strong hands-on design experience in power distribution and mission-critical facilities. This individual will play a key role in designing and supporting electrical infrastructure for data center environments while helping shape the growth of an expanding practice.

This role is ideal for someone who still enjoys being deeply involved in design work, is on the path to (or already holds) a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, and is motivated to step into leadership as the team grows.

This is a hybrid position based in the Houston, TX area, offering flexibility within a collaborative, high-growth environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design efforts for mission-critical and data center facilities
  • Design medium- and low-voltage power distribution systems, including redundancy strategies
  • Develop single-line diagrams, power distribution layouts, and detailed electrical designs
  • Perform electrical studies such as load flow, short circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies
  • Support design of backup power systems including generators, UPS systems, and transfer schemes
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams (mechanical, structural, etc.) to ensure integrated design solutions
  • Interface with utilities and support service entrance and infrastructure planning
  • Participate in construction support activities including submittal reviews, RFIs, and commissioning
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and best practices
  • Contribute to mentoring junior engineers and helping build out the electrical team over time

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET-accredited preferred)
  • 7–10 years of electrical engineering experience, with strong hands-on design work
  • Experience in power distribution and/or mission-critical environments (data centers strongly preferred)
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or actively pursuing with a defined timeline
  • Proficiency with electrical design tools (AutoCAD, Revit, SKM or similar)
  • Strong understanding of medium- and low-voltage systems, backup power, and redundancy design
  • Ability to operate independently and take ownership of projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Interest in contributing to a growing team and stepping into future leadership responsibilities

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: Up to $165,000
  • Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)
  • Hybrid work environment
  • Clear path for career growth as the organization expands
