We are looking for an individual with broad knowledge and experience as a consulting design engineer to join our team of highly skilled forensic engineers and scientists. Your work will include investigating such things as: electrical shock & electrocution hazards, equipment failures, design error and omissions, construction defects, contractor / subcontractor disputes, electrical safety issues, and other activities that suit your unique skill set.

Professional Requirements

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, MS or PhD preferred
  • Licensed Professional Engineer, NCEES record, and multiple state licenses are preferred
  • 15+ years experience being involved with a team of professional engineers in the design and construction administration of various market segments

Key Technical Knowledge

The successful candidate will demonstrate conceptual understanding of the application of high voltage power systems within broader field of Electrical Engineering

  • Has design experience and understanding in the correct application of exotic grounding systems such as: low resistance grounding, high resistance grounding, un-grounded systems; understands of the advantages / disadvantages of each and knows when each is a preferred solution over a traditional solidly grounded system.
  • Understand the principles of symmetrical components
  • Can provide a reasonable estimate, without reliance on calculators or reference materials, of the short circuit values in a distribution system based on information such as transformer size, secondary voltage, and impedance
  • Understands sub transient reactance and its impact on an electrical distribution system
  • Understands short-time withstand and its importance in selective coordination
  • His detailed knowledge of the NEC, NFPA 70E, and IEEE, in addition to other common standards such as NFPA
  • Experience in working with European standards is a plus
  • Experience in working with OSHA 1910 subpart S and 1926 subpart K is a plus
  • Skilled and experience in the evaluation and selection of the following equipment:
    1. Large power transformers (<20MVA), diesel generators (<2000kVA), metal clad switchgear (600V through 35kV), metal enclosed switchboards (250 โ€“ 600V) generator and motors intended for systems with significant harmonic content, combustion turbine generators (<40MVA), protective relaying packages, industrial control systems

Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following broad experience as a consulting design engineer:

  • 15+ years experience being involved with a team of professional engineers in the design and construction administration various facilities for various market segments
  • Experience in the design, development, and sealing of drawings for construction
  • Thorough understanding of the construction process including permitting, inspections, red tags, and certificate of occupancy
  • Experience in working with Code officials in both the permitting process and resolving final punch-list for certificate of occupancy
  • Experience in reading and responding to client RFPs, proposal writing, and the proposal interview process
  • Experience in the design process such as: developing multiple concepts for client review and selection, inter-disciplinary review / coordination, resolving and incorporating client comments during the design process
  • Experience in contractor interactions, knowledgeable in the RFI process, and skilled at resolving disputes with contractors involving issues such as: schedule delays, inadequate materials, and design errors
  • Experience in construction inspections, and keeping the contractorโ€™s work activities in alignment with the construction documents
  • Understands the difference in an ordinary standard of care and highest standard of care how these concepts impact the burden on the design engineer
  • Experience in working with various contract models such as: design / bid / build, design / build, engineer / procure / construction, and experience in working on behalf of the own in the role of โ€œownerโ€™s representativeโ€
  • Has been the engineer of record for multiple significant projects and able to demonstrate a variety of experience in different markets
  • Experience in reading / writing / reviewing the precise technical language used in construction contracts to define the requirements place upon the owner, the engineer / architect, and the contractor
  • Understands the contractor / subcontractor relationship

Non-Technical Skills

  • Well experienced in building / maintaining a good relationship with the client
  • Ability to interact with clients in a professional manner and develop business both internally and externally.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
  • Experience preparing technical reports
  • Mentoring junior engineers and assisting with their professional development
  • Good presentation skills and capable of effectively testifying in deposition and at trial
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office
