What is an electrical EIT?

Electrical EITs, or Electrical Engineers in Training, are individuals who have completed an accredited engineering degree and have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. They work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers (PEs) and assist in designing, developing, and testing electrical systems and components. EITs gain practical experience necessary to qualify for the PE exam and eventual licensure. Their tasks often include preparing technical drawings, conducting site visits, and performing calculations. This role is a foundational step for those aiming to become licensed electrical engineers.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an electrical EIT expect during their first year on the job?

As an Electrical Engineer-in-Training (EIT), you can expect to work on a variety of tasks such as assisting with the design of electrical systems, preparing CAD drawings, performing calculations, and supporting senior engineers with project documentation. Early responsibilities often include fieldwork, site visits, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to gather data and ensure compliance with project specifications. This role provides valuable exposure to industry standards, client interaction, and hands-on problem solving, laying the foundation for professional growth and eventual licensure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical EIT, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical EIT, you need a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, strong analytical skills, and an EIT certification (passed Fundamentals of Engineering exam). Familiarity with AutoCAD, MATLAB, and electrical design or simulation software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help you collaborate with teams and convey technical information clearly. These competencies ensure accurate project execution, safety compliance, and readiness for advancement toward professional licensure.
