What is an electrical drawing?

An Electrical Drawing job involves creating technical diagrams and schematics that detail the layout, design, and wiring of electrical systems. These drawings help electricians, engineers, and technicians understand circuit configurations, component placements, and wiring paths. Electrical drafters use specialized software like AutoCAD or Revit to produce accurate and standardized drawings. This role is critical in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and power distribution to ensure safe and efficient electrical installations. Strong attention to detail, technical knowledge, and proficiency in drafting software are essential for success in this field.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in electrical drawing?

Professionals in Electrical Drawing spend much of their day developing and revising technical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings based on project requirements and engineering input. They regularly collaborate with electrical engineers, architects, and project managers to gather information and ensure technical accuracy. Additionally, they review plans for compliance with industry standards, update documentation as projects evolve, and may attend coordination meetings to resolve design challenges. Staying organized and detail-oriented is crucial, as their work serves as the foundation for electrical system installations in construction and manufacturing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the electrical drawing position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Electrical Drawing, you need strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, proficiency in interpreting and creating technical schematics, and typically an associate degree or certification in electrical drafting or engineering technology. Familiarity with CAD software such as AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, or SolidWorks, and understanding of electrical codes and standards like NEC are commonly required. Attention to detail, communication, and problem-solving abilities are key soft skills for effective collaboration and accurate documentation. These skills ensure precise, code-compliant electrical designs that support project success and seamless teamwork with engineers and construction teams.

Job description

Electrical Engineer – Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)

About the Role
We are seeking a technically strong and detail-oriented Electrical Engineer with a passion for design excellence, quality, and mentorship to join our engineering team in a QA/QC-focused role.

This is not a traditional quality assurance position. It is ideal for an experienced engineer who enjoys serving as a technical leader across multiple projects, improving engineering standards, mentoring design teams, solving complex technical challenges, and enhancing the overall quality of engineering deliverables within a consulting environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in reviewing electrical design deliverables, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements, while promoting consistent design quality across a diverse portfolio of projects. This position is well suited for someone with a strong technical foundation who is committed to continuous improvement and engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead technical QA/QC reviews for electrical building systems projects throughout all phases of design and construction.
  • Review and validate electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, BIM models, and engineering documentation for technical accuracy, constructability, coordination, and code compliance.
  • Provide technical guidance to designers and engineers related to power distribution, lighting, fire alarm, grounding, life safety, emergency power, and low-voltage systems.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to resolve complex design issues and improve project quality.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of engineering standards, QA/QC procedures, templates, and best practices.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary coordination meetings and BIM-based design workflows.
  • Contribute to lessons learned initiatives, technical training sessions, and continuous improvement programs.
  • Support construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, conducting site reviews, reviewing shop drawings, and resolving field-related issues.
  • Promote technical consistency across projects while accommodating unique client and project requirements.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineering staff through technical guidance and knowledge sharing.
  • Perform quality reviews of electrical drawings, specifications, reports, and calculations during Concept, Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Documentation phases.
  • Verify compliance with internal quality standards and ensure consistency across drawing packages, documentation, and engineering deliverables.
  • Participate in internal quality audits and support engineering quality initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in electrical building systems design or consulting engineering, including technical review or QA/QC responsibilities.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for registration is considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of building electrical systems, including lighting, power distribution, fire alarm, grounding, life safety, emergency power, and low-voltage systems.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable electrical codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Proficiency in interpreting electrical drawings, design specifications, calculations, and technical reports.
  • Experience using AutoCAD, Revit (BIM), and electrical engineering analysis and calculation software.
  • Familiarity with BIM workflows and multidisciplinary coordination processes.
  • Experience with various project delivery methods, including Design-Build and Public-Private Partnership (P3) projects, is an asset.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, organizational, communication, and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Flexible or hybrid work arrangements, where applicable.
  • Paid vacation and sick leave.
  • Health and wellness programs.
  • Professional membership and continuing education reimbursement.
  • Career development, technical training, and professional growth opportunities.
  • Employee referral program.
  • Modern and collaborative work environment.
  • Reimbursement for work-related travel, where applicable.
  • Employee recognition programs, team-building activities, and social events.
