Are electrical design managers in demand?

Electrical design managers are in demand due to ongoing infrastructure development, renewable energy projects, and technological advancements requiring specialized electrical systems. They typically need strong technical skills, project management experience, and relevant certifications, making them valuable in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and energy.

What does an electrical design manager do?

An Electrical Design Manager oversees the planning, design, and implementation of electrical systems in various projects, such as buildings, infrastructure, or manufacturing facilities. They lead a team of engineers and designers, ensuring that all electrical designs meet safety standards, client specifications, and regulatory requirements. Their responsibilities also include coordinating with other engineering disciplines, managing project timelines and budgets, and providing technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

How does an electrical design manager typically collaborate with other engineering disciplines and project stakeholders?

An Electrical Design Manager works closely with mechanical, civil, and architectural teams to ensure that electrical systems are seamlessly integrated into overall project designs. Regular coordination meetings and design reviews are common, where the manager communicates requirements, resolves conflicts, and aligns project milestones. Additionally, they often interact with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and address specific project needs. Effective collaboration and clear communication are essential skills in this role, as successful outcomes depend on cross-disciplinary teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design manager?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Manager, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, project management experience, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, electrical design tools (such as AutoCAD, Revit, or ETAP), and relevant industry standards or certifications (like PE licensure) is crucial. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help manage teams, coordinate across departments, and drive project success. These capabilities ensure effective design solutions, compliance with safety and quality standards, and successful project delivery.

  • Develop project schedules, technical documentation, project estimates, and risk mitigation plans.
  • Support supplier identification and qualification activities.
  • Drive manufacturing process improvements and fixture development.
  • Ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, GMP, and internal quality system requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across engineering and manufacturing.

  • Experience with Altium or similar electrical design software.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional leadership skills.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple engineering projects simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Medical device or regulated manufacturing experience.
  • Experience working within FDA and ISO regulated environments.
  • Knowledge of GMP requirements.
  • Experience with Product Data Management systems (Agile, MasterControl, or similar).
  • Experience working with outsourced design partners.
  • Supplier qualification experience.
  • Project estimation and scheduling experience.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base Salary: $112,800–$137,900, depending on relevant experience and qualifications.
  • Annual performance bonus opportunity.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Hybrid work schedule (4 days onsite / 1 day remote).
  • Direct hire opportunity.
  • Professional development and career growth.
  • Up to 10% travel.

Why Join?

This opportunity offers the chance to remain hands-on with engineering while taking ownership of highly visible product development projects. You'll collaborate with talented cross-functional teams, influence technical decisions, and help deliver innovative electromechanical products from concept through commercialization.

If you're an Electrical Engineer looking to grow as a technical leader without stepping away from engineering, we'd love to connect.
