What is an electrical design engineer?

As an electrical design engineer, you design projects for power distribution and electrical systems. You use software, electrical products, and other equipment to make your designs a reality. Your job duties involve all aspects of the design process, such as modeling and drafting, creating layouts, and building electrical circuits. You need strong research skills and extensive knowledge of electrical design to perform your work. Your job involves travel to work sites to oversee the implementation of your design projects on jobs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Design Engineer, you need a solid grounding in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and typically a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or EPLAN), simulation tools (like MATLAB or PSpice), and knowledge of industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication make candidates stand out in this role. These capabilities are vital to ensure safe, innovative, and reliable electrical systems that meet project requirements and regulatory standards.

What are some common challenges electrical design engineers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Electrical Design Engineers often collaborate with mechanical, civil, and software teams on multidisciplinary projects, which can present challenges such as aligning design specifications, managing conflicting requirements, and maintaining clear communication across departments. Balancing the electrical system's needs with space constraints, thermal considerations, and integration with other systems requires strong problem-solving skills and adaptability. Successful engineers proactively coordinate with other teams, participate in regular design reviews, and stay organized to ensure project milestones are met efficiently.

What is the difference between Electrical Design Engineer vs Electrical Project Engineer?

AspectElectrical Design EngineerElectrical Project Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning electrical systems and componentsManaging electrical project execution and coordination
Required SkillsElectrical design, CAD, technical analysisProject management, scheduling, communication
Work EnvironmentDesign offices, engineering firmsConstruction sites, project sites
CertificationsPE license often preferred, engineering degreesPE license beneficial, project management certifications

Electrical Design Engineers focus on creating and developing electrical systems and drawings, while Electrical Project Engineers oversee the implementation, coordination, and management of electrical projects. Both roles require technical knowledge and often collaborate, but their core responsibilities differ in design versus project execution.

Job description

Agilityโ€™s commercially deployed humanoids operate alongside teams in warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and distribution centersโ€”tackling physically demanding and repetitive tasks while enabling workers to focus on higher-value work. With industry-leading safety standards and years of proven deployment data, we're pioneering a new era of automation that enhances human potential.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Manufacturing Engineer, Electrical to lead sustaining and continuous improvement initiatives in our robotics manufacturing facility. In this role, you will collaborate crossโ€‘functionally to optimize production processes, troubleshoot assembly and design issues on electroโ€‘mechanical systems and PCBAs, update electrical designs and implement the engineering changes to drive continuous improvement.

About the Work

Act as the primary Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the Manufacturing Engineering Sustaining team for all electrical components within the Robot, including highโ€‘density PCBAs, power distribution units, cable assemblies/harnesses, sensors, and battery systems. Diagnose and resolve (debug) manufacturing, field, and design issues with focus on electronic assemblies and components, supporting root cause analysis (RCA) and lead corrective/preventive actions (CAPA) for nonconformances. Collaborate with System and Test Engineering teams to understand, utilize and improve automated scripts and diagnostic tools (Python, C/C++) for flashing firmware, commissioning and testing electronic assemblies. Execute electrical design updates using Altium to improve manufacturability, resolve production and design issues, working crossโ€‘functionally with design, test, quality, and supply chain teams. Perform SMEโ€‘level technical review on all electrical design changes affecting the production robot, evaluating for DFM/DFA/DFT, technical issues, and standard consistency prior to release. Drive the validation and implementation of electrical Engineering Change Orders (ECRs & ECOs) by creating test protocols, performing the tests, reporting out the results, and implementing the validated change on the production line. Author and maintain upโ€‘toโ€‘date technical documentation, including specifications, drawings, BOMs, work instructions, process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, control plans, and tool/fixture/equipment specifications to support production and service operations. Disposition of nonconforming material delivered by supplier or produced by production. Collaborate with suppliers and contract manufacturers to validate design changes, material substitutions, and implement supplier testing. Analyze production data to identify bottlenecks, drive improvements in capacity, quality, cost, and safety, and implement lean manufacturing solutions. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

About You
