What is an electrical contractor?

Electrical contractors are professionals or companies that specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. They are responsible for ensuring that all electrical work complies with safety codes and regulations. Electrical contractors may work on wiring, lighting, power distribution, and other electrical components, and they often supervise electricians and manage electrical projects from start to finish. They typically need to be licensed and insured, meeting state and local requirements.

What does an electrical contractor do?

An electrical contractor works in the construction industry in a vital role. In this career, your duties and responsibilities require you to plan, install, and repair wiring and electrical systems in a building or for an outdoor project. An electrical contractor must be able to read blueprints and diagrams to understand the layout of the wiring and breaker boxes for the project on which they are working. These individuals also have to be able to work with a team and communicate properly, since larger projects often require several electricians and electrical contractors to complete the project on time and within the required project guidelines.

What are some common challenges electrical contractors face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Electrical Contractors often juggle several projects at once, which can present challenges such as coordinating schedules, ensuring compliance with diverse building codes, and managing supply chain delays for materials. Effective communication with clients, subcontractors, and inspectors is essential to keep all parties informed and projects on track. Additionally, prioritizing safety and quality control across different job sites requires strong organizational skills and the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Contractor, you need a thorough understanding of electrical systems, strong troubleshooting abilities, and relevant licensure or certification. Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC), electrical design software, and standard testing equipment is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you lead teams and interact effectively with clients. These competencies ensure safe, code-compliant installations and efficient project delivery in a highly regulated field.

What is the difference between Electrical Contractor vs Electrician?

AspectElectrical ContractorElectrician
CredentialsState license, business registration, insuranceApprentice or journeyman license, certifications
Work EnvironmentOversees projects, manages teams, contractsPerforms wiring, installations, repairs
Employer & Industry UsageOwns or manages electrical contracting businessesWorks for contractors or independently

Electrical Contractors typically hold licenses and manage electrical projects, overseeing teams and client contracts. Electricians focus on hands-on electrical work, performing installations and repairs. While electricians work under contractors, electrical contractors run their own businesses and handle project management. Both roles require licensing, but their responsibilities and work scope differ significantly.

Job description

Electrical Project Manager

Type: Direct Hire

Location: San Diego, CA

Salary: $115K–$140K DOE

About the Role

We are recruiting an Electrical Project Manager for an established commercial electrical contractor in San Diego. The role runs projects from estimating turnover through closeout, with full financial responsibility for each job.

The contractor provides fully integrated electrical and building systems installation, with in-house capability spanning pre-construction, new construction, renovation, and maintenance. Project work ranges from small-scale, time-and-materials jobs through large-scale, technology-intensive builds across healthcare, life sciences and laboratory, mission critical, higher education, and federal markets. The company operates in a union electrical environment.

This Electrical Project Manager role suits someone who already owns the numbers rather than only the schedule — someone who has priced change orders, developed a schedule of values, worked from takeoffs alongside field leadership, and closed out as-builts. The position carries the project from conceptual development forward, not only from turnover. Work is performed onsite the company’s East County office.

Key Responsibilities

Project Financial Ownership

•     Own the project’s financial performance, including budget estimates, cost tracking, schedule of values, and billing

•     Price and negotiate change orders with owners and general contractors

•     Prepare and submit budget estimates and progress reports throughout the life of the project

Project Execution

•     Participate in the conceptual development of projects and oversee their organization, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation

•     Take contract and bid documents at turnover from estimating, review scope, and drive the project from inception through completion

•     Build and maintain the project schedule, including procurement and equipment delivery dates

•     Integrate manpower planning with the project schedule and field leadership

•     Ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and applicable federal, state, and local building regulations

Document Control

•     Manage submittals, requests for information (RFIs), change orders, permits, insurance, bonding, and project correspondence

Coordination and Field Support

•     Coordinate with owners, general contractors, design professionals, and subcontractors to resolve scope and field issues

•     Support field leadership on manpower, safety, and productivity, and provide backup when issues surface onsite

•     Select subcontractors and suppliers alongside estimating, engineering, and purchasing

Qualifications

Required

•     5–10 years managing electrical construction projects for an electrical contractor, in an Electrical Project Manager or comparable role

•     Demonstrated electrical scope depth: change order pricing, takeoffs, schedule of values development, and as-built closeout

•     Direct financial ownership of projects, including budget, cost tracking, and billing

•     Experience working in a union electrical environment

•     Working knowledge of construction contract documentation and federal, state, and city regulations

•     Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Preferred

•     Bachelor of Science in construction management or an engineering discipline

•     Project experience in healthcare, life sciences or laboratory, mission critical, or federal construction

•     AutoCAD familiarity

Compensation & Employment

Employment Type: The selected candidate will be hired as a full-time employee directly with our client.

Salary: $115K–$140K per year, DOE

Additional Compensation: Discretionary bonus

Benefits: Medical, dental, and 401(k)

Work Model: Onsite, at the company office

Relocation: Relocation required if not a commutable distance from San Diego, CA.
