Join UL Solutions' AHL Controls Engineering team and help evaluate the safety and reliability of electrical and electronic control systems used in appliances, HVAC equipment, lighting products, and other electronically controlled devices. This engineering role combines hands-on technical analysis, laboratory testing, and customer interaction while developing expertise in embedded controls, safety-related software, and international safety standards such as UL/IEC 60730-1.

University Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related engineering discipline from an accredited program.

Preferred Qualifications

Coursework, internship, co-op, research, military, or professional experience involving:

  • Electronic circuit design and analysis 
  • Embedded systems or microcontroller-based products
  • Control systems or industrial automation
  • Firmware or software development
  • Electrical testing and laboratory equipment
  • Reading and interpreting electrical schematics and technical documentation

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. The estimated salary range for this position is $64,800- $86,4000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday and personal days (totaling 12 days), and sick time off (72 hours).

  • Work with a team of experienced engineers evaluating electrical and electronic control systems used in consumer, commercial and industrial products.
  • Apply engineering fundamentals to the assessment of hardware, software, and embedded control systems.
  • Gain experience in the application of international safety standards, including UL/CSA/IEC 60730-1 for automatic electrical controls.
  • Develop technical expertise in embedded hardware, software-controlled systems, and functional safety engineering.
  • Participate in laboratory testing, engineering analysis, customer interactions, and project management activities.
  • Ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in electronics, embedded systems, controls, software, or product development who are interested in building technical expertise in product safety and functional safety engineering.
  • Perform engineering evaluations on electrical and electronic control systems to applicable safety standards.
  • Review electrical schematics, circuit designs, software documentation, control system architectures, and technical specifications.
  • Support project planning activities including scope definition, scheduling, sample requirements, and project estimates.
  • Coordinate laboratory testing activities by preparing test plans, data sheets, and instructions for laboratory personnel based on product designs and applicable requirements.
  • Analyze test results and prepare engineering reports documenting compliance findings.
  • Communicate technical requirements, project status, and evaluation results to customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Investigate hardware, software, and system-level issues identified during product evaluations.
  • Assist in the assessment of embedded control systems, programmable electronics, sensors, and safety-related control functions. 
  • Participate in customer meetings, design reviews, and occasional witness testing activities.
  • Contribute to the development of new test methods, engineering procedures, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain knowledge of evolving technologies, embedded control systems, software-enabled products, and applicable safety standards.
  • May represent UL at industry related functions such as seminars and trade shown. Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Perform other duties as directed.
