Job description

Position: Electrical Engineer II

Duration: 1 – 3 years Contract.
Work Model: Hybrid (Onsite Birmingham, AL + Remote as needed)

Position Summary

The Electrical Designer II supports the development and execution of electrical designs for utility and power generation facilities, with a primary focus on DC system wiring and physical design. This role collaborates closely with engineers, project teams, and plant personnel to produce accurate, code-compliant electrical designs that support construction, inspections, acceptance testing, and system checkout activities.

The ideal candidate brings strong CAD expertise, hands-on experience with DC electrical systems, and the ability to work independently on complex design tasks with minimal oversight.


Key Responsibilities

Electrical Design & Drafting

  • Collaborate with project teams to understand electrical design requirements and objectives
  • Develop detailed electrical designs, including:
    • System layouts
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Elementary diagrams
    • Wiring diagrams
  • Perform detail design for DC electrical systems, including:
    • Battery systems
    • Battery chargers
    • Inverters
    • UPS systems
    • DC fuse panels
  • Utilize CAD software (AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, CAD Overlay; Revit or SolidWorks Electrical a plus) to create and modify drawings
  • Maintain organized documentation including drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)

Compliance, Quality & Coordination

  • Ensure designs comply with industry standards, electrical codes, and regulatory requirements (NEC, IEEE, etc.)
  • Conduct design reviews, quality checks, and updates to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Support inspections, acceptance testing, and system checkout activities
  • Address design issues and provide effective technical solutions
  • Coordinate with engineers, architects, vendors, and plant staff to integrate electrical systems into overall project designs

Project & Field Support

  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for project deliverables
  • Support field activities, meetings, and inspections as required
  • Work both independently and as part of a project team

Required Qualifications

  • Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Design, or related field
  • 5–7 years of experience as an Electrical Designer or similar role
  • Experience with DC electrical system design, including:
    • Battery systems
    • Chargers
    • Inverters
    • UPS
    • DC fuse panels
  • 7+ years of experience with:
    • AutoCAD
    • AutoCAD Electrical
    • CAD Overlay
  • Ability to prepare single-line, elementary, and wiring diagrams with minimal supervision
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design principles and practices
  • Familiarity with electrical codes and standards (NEC, IEEE)
  • High attention to detail and commitment to design quality
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with plant staff, engineers, and vendors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • Experience designing electrical systems for:
    • Power plants
    • Industrial facilities
    • Utility infrastructure
  • Exposure to PLC programming or control systems
  • Prior experience supporting Southern Company or utility environments
