What is an electrical apprentice?

Electrical Apprentices are individuals who are learning the electrical trade through a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training, typically under the supervision of licensed electricians. They assist with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems while developing skills and knowledge required for the profession. The apprenticeship usually lasts 3 to 5 years and prepares individuals to become licensed electricians upon completion. Apprentices are paid employees and gain valuable hands-on experience throughout the program.

What are the typical responsibilities of an electrical apprentice?

As an Electrical Apprentice, you'll assist licensed electricians with installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Your daily tasks often include running wire, connecting outlets and switches, reading blueprints, and learning to use various hand and power tools safely. You'll also be responsible for keeping the work area organized, following safety protocols, and gradually taking on more complex tasks as your skills grow. Regular collaboration with journeymen and other apprentices is common, helping you learn teamwork and problem-solving on the job.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electrical apprentice, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electrical Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of electrical theory, strong math skills, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often accompanied by enrollment in an apprenticeship program. Familiarity with tools like multimeters, conduit benders, and electrical code reference materials is essential. Attention to detail, teamwork, and a willingness to learn are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring safety, quality workmanship, and successful progression in the electrical trade.

What is the difference between Electrical Apprentice vs Electrician?

CertificationsNone initially; training requiredLicensed or certified after completing apprenticeship
Work ExperienceEntry-level, on-the-job trainingFull professional experience and licensing
Job ResponsibilitiesAssisting with installations, learning skillsPerforming electrical work independently

Can I get a job as an electrical apprentice with no experience?

Electrical apprenticeships typically require little to no prior experience, as they are designed to train individuals new to the trade. Applicants usually need a high school diploma or equivalent and may need to pass basic aptitude tests; on-the-job training and classroom instruction are part of the program. Having some knowledge of tools and safety procedures can be helpful but is not mandatory for entry-level apprenticeships.

How do I start my electrical apprentice apprenticeship?

To start an electrical apprentice apprenticeship, you typically need to meet minimum age and education requirements, such as a high school diploma or equivalent. You should apply through local unions, trade schools, or electrical contractors, and may need to pass an aptitude test or interview. Once accepted, you will work under the supervision of licensed electricians while completing on-the-job training and classroom instruction to earn your journeyman license.

Is it worth becoming an electrical apprentice?

Becoming an electrical apprentice provides hands-on training, industry experience, and the opportunity to earn a wage while learning. It can lead to a licensed electrician position with higher earning potential and job stability, making it a valuable entry point into the electrical trade.

Job description

Commercial, Industrial & Petroleum Project Work

Company: J&L Electric

Location: Battle Creek, MI

Pay: $32–$45 per hour, based on experience

Employment Type: Full-time

Travel: Primarily local work with occasional regional / overnight travel as needed

Required: Active Michigan Journeyman Electrician License and valid driver’s license

About the Role

J&L Electric is hiring a Journeyman Electrician to support a wide range of field electrical work across commercial, industrial, residential, service, and petroleum-related projects.

This is a hands-on field role for an electrician who can do more than one type of work. The right candidate has real installation and service experience, can read plans, run conduit, pull wire, troubleshoot issues, and work safely across active jobsites.

This is not a factory-only maintenance role. We need someone who is comfortable working in the field, starting projects, solving jobsite problems, and completing quality installations.

What You’ll Do

  • Install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
  • Complete electrical work across commercial, industrial, residential, service, and petroleum fueling environments.
  • Run conduit, pull wire, install panels, wire equipment, and complete new field installations.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Troubleshoot electrical issues in the field and recommend practical solutions.
  • Support petroleum-related projects such as gas stations, fueling systems, dispensers, and related electrical installations when needed.
  • Assist with fire alarm, low-voltage, EV charger, and specialty electrical projects.
  • Mentor apprentices and help reinforce safe, high-quality workmanship.
  • Follow all company safety standards and jobsite procedures.
  • Report to the Battle Creek shop most days before heading to job locations.
  • Travel regionally on occasion for project work; per diem and lodging are provided when overnight travel is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Active Michigan Journeyman Electrician License.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on commercial or industrial electrical experience.
  • Experience running conduit, pulling wire, installing panels, and completing field installations.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints, schematics, and electrical plans.
  • Strong working knowledge of current NEC requirements.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical issues in real-world field environments.
  • Comfortable working from the Battle Creek shop and traveling regionally when needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work safely on active jobsites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Petroleum fueling, gas station, or fuel system electrical experience.
  • Residential electrical service or installation experience.
  • EV charger installation experience.
  • Fire alarm or low-voltage installation experience.
  • Experience mentoring apprentices or junior field team members.
  • Experience using tablets, mobile apps, or digital job documentation tools.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and comfort working across varied jobsite conditions.

What Makes Someone a Strong Fit

A strong candidate has experience in more than one electrical environment and can adapt from job to job. We are especially interested in electricians who have worked in commercial or industrial field installation and can also support service, residential, or petroleum-related work as needed.

A candidate may be a strong fit if they have experience with:

  • Commercial electrical installations
  • Industrial electrical field work
  • Service calls and troubleshooting
  • New construction rough-ins
  • Conduit bending and installation
  • Wire pulls
  • Panel and equipment wiring
  • EV chargers
  • Fire alarm / low-voltage support
  • Petroleum or fueling system sites

Candidates Who May Not Be a Fit

This role is likely not the right fit for someone whose experience is limited to factory maintenance only.

We are not looking for someone who has only:

  • Wired or maintained machines inside a plant
  • Troubleshot production equipment but not completed field installations
  • Worked in one facility without running conduit, pulling wire, or building new systems
  • Held a journeyman card but has little hands-on installation experience outside a factory setting

Compensation & Benefits

  • $32–$45 per hour, based on experience
  • Weekly pay
  • Overtime potential
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Health Savings Account
  • Paid holidays
  • Vacation and sick time
  • Paid training and certification support
  • Manufacturer training and safety training
  • Company-provided uniforms and safety gear
  • Company vehicle / fuel card eligibility based on role, route, and timing
  • Per diem and lodging for approved overnight travel
  • Steady, year-round work with a family-owned company
