Job Title: Electrical Engineer
Department: Engineering
Reports to: Discipline Lead
GENERAL PURPOSE OF THIS JOB (Summary)
The Electrical Engineer provides safe, "Best for Project" solutions for complex projects, while ensuring regulatory compliance for all electrical engineering deliverables. The Electrical Engineer is responsible for collaborating with other disciplines and team members in developing safe and effective designs. This includes participation in model and drawing reviews and completing calculations, as necessary to ensure that systems will perform as intended. The Electrical Engineer is expected to have a general knowledge of pertinent codes and standards and their application to the work performed. The Electrical Engineer will work under the guidance of more senior personnel to follow company workflows and standards and continually improve their technical skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
HEALTH AND SAFETY
  • Work in compliance with all health and safety rules and regulations for Cementation
  • Be aware of any health and safety hazards or infractions and report same to Health and Safety Department
  • Ensure all applicable safety codes and regulations are met by appropriate design and use of technology
  • Be a champion for safety, advocating safe behaviour while incorporating safety into the designs produced by the group
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This description lists the core responsibilities and duties of the position. Additional duties deemed to be within the incumbent's capabilities, on an as required basis, might be assigned by management.
    • Design electrical power distribution systems completing all necessary calculations to ensure compliance with codes, standards, regulations, special industry guidelines, company and Client standards
    • Model electrical systems in ETAP and perform load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash studies
    • Select electrical equipment and work with designers on electrical equipment layouts
    • Design control panels and control panel schematics
    • Design shaft signalling and fiber network systems
    • Provide input on P&IDs and interpret them as needed to design I/O schematics
    • Participate in design reviews, addressing electrical and other concerns and collaborating with the Cementation Operations group to ensure that facilities will be built in the safest, most efficient, and cost-effective manner possible
    • At various project phases, participate in risk assessments, identifying and mitigating risks that are deemed to be unacceptable
    • Actively collaborate with electrical designers, providing technical direction in designs and drawing creation to ensure that design requirements will be adequately conveyed
    • Collaborate with Cementation's Project Services and Operations groups to produce "Best for Project" designs that are safe, reflect the client's operability requirements, and are constructible
    • Contribute to the maintenance and development of departmental standards as assigned, ensuring conformance with current codes, standards and regulations
    • Understand, follow, or use Cementation standards including specifications, design basis and criteria templates, design calculations and guides, workflow procedures, and project controls forms, etc.
    • Provide technical assistance during tender periods to answer questions, assess vendor packages and make technical bid recommendations in support of selecting successful bidders
    • Conduct quality assurance shop or site visits to inspect fabricated or constructed work to assure that installations comply with regulatory, Cementation and Client requirements
    • Prepare and issue shop and site review reports, complete with observations and recommendations. Follow up as necessary to ensure that recommendations have been satisfactorily addressed
    • Other duties as assigned
TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS
  • This position has the requirement for occasional travel to project sites, offices, and to conduct shop reviews
  • Travel period may range from one day to several weeks and may include overseas assignments
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Has no direct reports, however, will oversee and review the work of electrical designers
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution
  • 4 to 8 years of relevant experience
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer or actively pursuing a Professional Engineer's License
  • Experience in discipline specific design of Underground Mining or Heavy Industrial Electrical Infrastructure is preferred
