What is an electric vehicle technician?

Electric vehicle technicians are specialized automotive professionals who diagnose, repair, and maintain electric vehicles (EVs). Their duties include working on high-voltage battery systems, electric motors, charging components, and vehicle software. They need to be familiar with the latest EV technologies and safety protocols, as EV systems differ significantly from traditional gasoline or diesel vehicles. To become an EV technician, one typically needs specialized training or certification in electric vehicle technology.

What are the typical collaboration points between electric vehicle engineers and other departments during the development process?

Electric Vehicle engineers frequently collaborate with teams such as software development, battery technology, manufacturing, and quality assurance throughout the vehicle development cycle. This collaboration ensures that components like battery systems, vehicle controls, and charging infrastructure are seamlessly integrated and meet safety and performance standards. Regular cross-functional meetings and design reviews are common, allowing engineers to address technical challenges, share progress, and align on project goals. Working closely with other departments also helps in identifying and resolving issues early, leading to a smoother development process and a higher-quality final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an electric vehicle technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Electric Vehicle Technician, you need a solid grounding in automotive technology, electrical systems, and EV-specific knowledge, often supported by a relevant technical diploma or certification. Familiarity with diagnostic tools, battery management systems, and safety protocols for high-voltage systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help technicians diagnose issues and explain solutions to customers. These competencies ensure safe, efficient repair and maintenance of electric vehicles, supporting reliability and customer satisfaction in a rapidly evolving industry.

Ford'sElectric Vehicles, Digital and Design (EVDD)team is charged with delivering the company's vision of a fully electric transportation future. EVDD is customer-obsessed, entrepreneurial, and data-driven and is dedicated to delivering industry-leading customer experience for electric vehicle buyers and owners. You'll join an agile team of doers pioneering our EV future by working collaboratively, staying focused on only what matters, and delivering excellence day in and day out. Join us to make positive changes by helping build a better world where every person is free to move and pursue their dreams.

What you'll do...

  • Architect & Code: Design, develop, maintain, and support multiple mission-critical cloud platform components and APIs that power Ford's connected vehicle ecosystem.

  • Own End-to-End Delivery: Take ownership of software services from initial design to deployment and production operations on modern cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP & Kubernetes).

  • Scale & Optimize: Build high-performance, resilient, and event-driven microservices capable of handling massive, real-time data streams.

  • Drive Engineering Excellence: Champion clean code, Test-Driven Development (TDD), robust API design, and comprehensive load/performance testing to ensure ultra-high reliability.

  • Collaborate & Innovate: Partner closely with product managers, technical leaders, and cross-functional teams in an agile environment to translate complex requirements into production-ready solutions.

  • Monitor & Maintain: Implement proactive monitoring, alerting, and performance-management strategies to ensure system health and adhere to strict SLAs.

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • Experience: 5+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, developing, and operating high-performance, cloud-based platforms and microservices.

  • Core Tech Stack: 5+ years in roles requiring proven expertise in Java and Spring Boot.

  • Cloud & Containers: 5+ years in roles hands-on experience with cloud-native architectures (AWS or GCP) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).

  • Data & Messaging: 5+ years' experience building event-driven systems using Kafka (or cloud equivalents like Pub/Sub) and working with relational/non-relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).

  • DevOps & CI/CD: 5+ years demonstrating technical proficiency with modern DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub, ArgoCD, SonarQube) to ensure secure and efficient delivery.

  • Testing & Quality: 5+ years' experience in roles demonstrating a strong commitment to writing clean, maintainable code with experience in TDD and API performance/load testing.

Even better, you may have...

  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field.

  • Experience with advanced GCP/AWS cloud-native tools (e.g., Cloud Run, Spanner, Cloud Functions, Cloud Scheduler, GKE/EKS, Terraform).

  • Deep understanding of API gateway technologies (e.g., Apigee, Tyk) and protocols (gRPC, WebSockets, REST, JSON).

  • Experience with GitOps and advanced deployment strategies (e.g., Canary deployments, Tekton, ArgoCD).

  • Experience supporting critical, "always-on" applications in high-throughput, low-latency production environments.

  • Ability to make data-informed architectural decisions, even when dealing with imperfect or incomplete data.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home?
