Job description

Engineer/Computer Systems Analyst

Birmingham, AL

This position provides support for operating issues affecting the reliable operations of the bulk electric system for Southern Company Services Transmission's Energy Management Systems (EMS).  This position is responsible for the implementation, execution, and improvement of operational processes to ensure system availability for all computer systems supported by the EMS department and used by Southern Company operating companies' transmission control centers (OPCO TCC's) as well as the power coordination center (PCC) and their respective back-office personnel. 

A successful candidate will provide day-to-day operational support and 24x7 emergency support for the OSI Monarch SCADA systems and other tools that support the operational needs of our customers. The primary focus of the role is supporting Windows PC deployments, troubleshooting PC issues, and recommending process and technology updates for the team and/or organization. This role will provide some Windows scripting or PowerShell solutions. Additional assignments may include support of Virtualized Infrastructure for Windows 10/11, RHEL 8, Windows Server, and a future VDI implementation. We are also responsible for supporting department projects and initiatives and other activities focused on support of the EMS Support Center and EMS department. 

Required Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Windows computer systems and application support

  • Proficient with Microsoft Windows desktop administration 

  • Proficient with Hardware, Software, and Network troubleshooting

  • Proficient with basic desktop component hardware and their replacement (Hard drive, memory, video cards, etc.)

  • Moderate experience with Microsoft Windows Imaging, including Microsoft Deployment Image Servicing and Management Tool, Deployment Toolkit, Assessment and Deployment Kit

  • Experience with Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) / Microsoft Endpoint Manager is a plus

  • Experience with Virtual Desktop Infrastructure support and deployment is a plus

  • Moderate Windows shell scripting & PowerShell programming skills are necessary

  • Understanding of physical/virtual servers and workstation maintenance are necessary

  • Understanding of computer network concepts are necessary

  • Must be able to obtain Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) and Insider Threat Program (ITP) security clearance

  • Good communication and organizational skills required to work cross team and with vendors to perform administration of systems and coordinate releases with the vendor(s) as listed above

Experience and Education:

  • Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience

  • Experience supporting and troubleshooting computer systems is a plus 

  • General understanding of computer system infrastructure, operations, and security

  • Knowledge of electric utility transmission operations is a plus

  • Must have a customer focused attitude and the desire and ability to learn about the Transmission core business and its needs.

  • Must have analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills. 

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing priorities as well as delegation skills.

  • Ability to bring consensus and buy-in among people with different views and agendas.

  • Ability to grasp complex Energy Management Systems operational issues, risk factors, and business drivers.
