Job description

As an electrical engineer, you will join a fast-paced team of engineers creating cutting edge products for the US Air Force at the Air Force Research Laboratory. You will work alongside BAE Systems and US Air Force engineers to develop technologies that increase the capabilities of our nation's military. Our team's goal is to create solutions that optimize human performance across Air Force systems and missions. We accomplish this through iterative hardware and software practices, maintaining a tight feedback loop with the warfighters. Our unique customers give you the opportunity for interesting and meaningful work. Our technologies have been used across military services as well as by civilian government and commercial organizations.
Our small team allows us to be quick and efficient while giving you the chance to grow as a valued part of the team. This also gives you the ability to be involved in the entire development process: requirements, conceptualization, design, prototyping, and evaluation. There is a significant opportunity for you to develop novel solutions to problems. We encourage our team to be constant learners, staying current on industry best practices and thinking outside the box.
The Engineering, Science and Analysis (ESA) Strategic Capabilities Unit comprises the technical talent and organizational leadership that enables the successful delivery of high-impact discriminating technologies for our customers' missions. Our collaborative, cross-functional teams are committed to innovation, integrity, continual learning and strong execution.
What You'll Do:
  • Work closely with a multi-discipline engineering team to develop custom solutions to support wearable technologies including a wide variety of miniaturized sensors, communications gear, and devices to enhance warfighter safety and performance in the field or in training.
  • Interface with Air Force researchers and operational personnel to understand requirements.
  • Identify, integrate, and evaluate optimal hardware and software solutions to meet development objectives, including reverse engineering for integration into custom solutions.
  • Design PCB layout with appropriate consideration for digital and analog elements.
  • Complete PCB component-level assembly, circuit troubleshooting and debugging.
  • Develop programming of embedded systems.
  • Perform simulations to validate designs.
  • Participate in all phases of a project lifecycle from planning to concept development to delivery.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

Required Skills and Education
  • BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level related degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of related experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Demonstrated ability in firmware programming languages such as C or C++ and Python.
  • Experience with a circuit schematic drawing and PCB layout program such as Altium Designer or KiCAD.
  • Ability to multitask and support multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to problem solve and innovate.
#LI-NP1
A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access.
Preferred Skills and Education
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering preferred.
  • Experience with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
  • Experience with linear control loops.
  • Demonstrated hobbyist-level circuits and programming work, such as with Arduino elements.
