Elasticsearch Observability Engineer information

What does an Elasticsearch Observability Engineer do?

An Elasticsearch Observability Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining observability solutions using the Elasticsearch stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana, and Beats). Their primary role is to ensure that systems are monitored effectively, logs and metrics are collected and analyzed, and issues are detected and diagnosed quickly. They collaborate with development and operations teams to build dashboards, set up alerts, and optimize performance for monitoring infrastructure and applications. These engineers play a key role in improving system reliability and supporting incident response.

How does an Elasticsearch Observability Engineer typically collaborate with development and operations teams?

As an Elasticsearch Observability Engineer, you frequently partner with both development and operations teams to design and implement monitoring solutions using the Elastic Stack. You'll help developers instrument applications for better traceability and support operations in troubleshooting and optimizing system performance. Regular communication is key, as you'll often lead workshops, create dashboards, and respond to incidents collaboratively. This cross-functional teamwork ensures observability solutions align with organizational goals and provide actionable insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Elasticsearch Observability Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Elasticsearch Observability Engineer, you need expertise in Elasticsearch, log management, and data analysis, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with observability tools such as Kibana, Logstash, Beats, and experience with cloud platforms and scripting languages like Python or Bash are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you stand out in this role. These competencies are vital for ensuring system reliability, quickly detecting issues, and delivering actionable insights for continuous improvement.

What is the difference between Elasticsearch Observability Engineer vs Elasticsearch Developer?

AspectElasticsearch Observability EngineerElasticsearch Developer
Primary FocusMonitoring, logging, and observability of Elasticsearch clusters and related systemsDeveloping, customizing, and optimizing Elasticsearch applications and integrations
Skills & CertificationsKnowledge of Elasticsearch, Prometheus, Grafana, scripting, and monitoring toolsProficiency in Elasticsearch APIs, Java, REST, and development frameworks
Work EnvironmentOperations teams, DevOps, SREs, cloud environmentsDevelopment teams, software engineers, backend developers

While both roles require expertise in Elasticsearch, the Elasticsearch Observability Engineer focuses on system monitoring and ensuring Elasticsearch health, whereas the Elasticsearch Developer concentrates on building and customizing Elasticsearch-based applications. Their skills and daily tasks differ, but both are essential in Elasticsearch-centric environments.

Job description

Apple IS&T’s infrastructure powers billions of transactions every day. At this scale, the systems we build must be resilient, observable, and extraordinarily efficient. We are looking for a Software Engineer with deep expertise in Go and distributed systems to join our team and help build the next generation of Observability Platform.
Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) is part of IS&T and delivers global-scale platforms and services that keep Apple's operations secure and running. The team manages identity, device security, and anti-abuse platforms - covering everything from manufacturing and repairs to software updates and activations. ETS also oversees supply chain, manufacturing, and partner integration platforms, protecting data on more than 2.5 billion devices worldwide. And when Apple prepares for a global product launch, ETS owns the systems that ramp factory production - managing serial numbers, network credentials, and verified software.
This is an individual contributor role where you'll take ownership of significant components of a mission-critical service, working with growing independence alongside senior engineers and architects to solve increasingly complex and ambiguous problems.
Description
Our team is building an observability platform that supports some of Apple IS&T’s most critical and high-traffic services. We are designing a platform that must remain consistent and performant even as it grows to handle petabytes of data resulting from billions of daily transactions.
As a Software Engineer, you will contribute directly to the design and implementation of core backend services. You'll work alongside senior engineers to understand system architecture, take ownership of well-scoped components, and build the skills to tackle increasingly complex problems across the stack.","responsibilities":"Build and maintain highly available, fault-tolerant components of a distributed system operating at petabyte scale.
Design and implement backend services and features in Go, with attention to performance, correctness, and operational simplicity.
Participate in technical design discussions and contribute ideas to architecture decisions.
Take part in code reviews and help uphold engineering best practices across the team.
Investigate performance issues and implement fixes and improvements under guidance from senior team members.
Collaborate with peers and learn from senior engineers through pairing, code reviews, and design discussions.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience contributing to observability platforms - including metrics pipelines (Prometheus), log aggregation (Elasticsearch), and Application Performance Monitoring (APM) tools.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
Strong proficiency in Go (Golang) with production experience building backend services or infrastructure components.
Solid experience designing and operating components of distributed systems - including replication, fault tolerance, and distributed coordination.
Hands-on experience contributing to systems that handle large-scale or petabyte-scale data workloads.
Good understanding of database internals - including storage engines, query optimization, and indexing strategies.
4 -12 years of overall experience.
