What is an EIT project engineer?

An EIT Project Engineer is an entry-level engineer who has earned the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, typically by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. They work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers and assist with planning, designing, and managing engineering projects. Their responsibilities often include preparing technical reports, conducting site inspections, and ensuring projects meet regulatory and safety standards. This position is a common pathway for recent engineering graduates who are working towards becoming licensed Professional Engineers (PE).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EIT project engineer?

To thrive as an EIT Project Engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in engineering, strong analytical skills, and successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) exam. Familiarity with CAD software, project management tools, and engineering codes or standards is typically required. Effective communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure accurate technical work, efficient project execution, and seamless collaboration within engineering teams.

What are some common challenges faced by EIT project engineers in their first year, and how can they overcome them?

EIT (Engineer-in-Training) Project Engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting to fast-paced project timelines, understanding complex technical documentation, and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. To overcome these hurdles, it's helpful to proactively seek mentorship, ask questions when unsure, and utilize available training resources. Building strong communication skills and staying organized with project management tools can also ease the transition and set the foundation for future growth within the engineering field.

EIT Project Manager - Vendor Candidate Profile Guidance
Enterprise Technology Services (ETS)
Primary Focus Areas: Application Development for Enterprise Process Reporting and Pharmacy, Clinical and Communication Systems, Customer Engagement Solutions
Ideal Candidate:
A structured, detail oriented IT Project Manager who understands technical conversations, excels at documentation, proactively manages budget and risks, and thrives in a process driven PMO environment supporting Enterprise Technology Services.
1. Technical Expectations (Foundational, Not Hands On)
The Project Manager is not expected to perform technical development work. However, candidates must demonstrate enough technical comprehension to effectively manage discussions, decisions, and follow ups without slowing delivery.
• What we expect to see in resumes and interviews:
o Experience managing application development projects in complex IT environments, preferably healthcare, insurance, or regulated industries.
o Ability to understand and facilitate conversations across architects, developers, analysts, and business partners.
o Demonstrated strength in capturing meeting outcomes, decisions, risks, and actionable next steps clearly and accurately.
• Proven experience managing project financials, including:
o Monitoring budget versus actuals.
o Proactively tracking burn rate.
o Identifying risks related to hours, funding, or scope before issues occur.
• Comfort managing cross functional dependencies and escalating risks appropriately.
Candidates who simply coordinate tasks without understanding context will struggle in this role.
2. Key Success Criteria and Culture Fit
We are looking for a Project Manager who will integrate well with an established PMO culture that values consistency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Critical success attributes:
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to consistently follow established PMO processes, standards, and governance.
• High tolerance for documentation requirements. This role involves significant written artifacts and structured reporting.
• Coachable mindset and openness to feedback.
• Willingness to learn terminology, systems, and internal ways of working.
• Proactive work style. We value PMs who anticipate issues and next steps rather than waiting for direction.
• Professional communication skills with the ability to engage technical and nontechnical audiences.
This role is not well suited for candidates who dislike documentation, resist structure, or prefer loosely defined processes.

1 years - Relevant work experience in EIT

• Azure DevOps (ADO) or similar Agile delivery tools for:
• Backlog and work item tracking.
• Sprint or iteration awareness.
• Coordination with development teams.
Hands on expertise is not required, but working knowledge and confidence navigating these tools is essential.

This role operates within a structured PMO environment. Experience creating and maintaining formal documentation is mandatory.

• Project Workbook.
• Project Charter.
