What is an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA)?

EFDAs, or Expanded Function Dental Assistants, are dental assistants who have received additional training and certification to perform advanced dental procedures beyond the duties of a standard dental assistant. Their tasks often include placing dental fillings, taking impressions, applying sealants and fluoride, and other hands-on patient care procedures, all under the supervision of a licensed dentist. The specific functions EFDAs can perform vary by state, depending on local regulations and certifications required.

What are some common challenges EFDA professionals face when transitioning into a new dental practice?

Expanded Function Dental Assistants (EFDAs) often encounter challenges when adapting to a new dental practice, such as learning different office protocols, adjusting to varying dentist preferences, and becoming familiar with new equipment or software systems. Building trust with a new team and patients can also require time and strong communication skills. However, most practices provide onboarding and training to help EFDAs integrate smoothly, and a proactive approach to learning and collaboration can make the transition much easier.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA), and why are they important?

To thrive as an EFDA, you need a solid background in dental assisting, proficiency in restorative procedures, and completion of an accredited EFDA program with state certification. Familiarity with dental radiography equipment, dental charting software, and various dental materials is typically required. Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal communication help EFDAs excel in patient care and teamwork. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality dental services in a clinical setting.

What is the difference between Efda vs Dental Assistant?

Are EFDA jobs in high demand?

EFDA (Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary) jobs are in steady demand due to ongoing needs for dental care and the requirement for trained dental assistants with expanded skills. Employment opportunities are often available in dental practices, clinics, and hospitals, especially for those with certification and experience in procedures like coronal polishing and sealant application.

Job description

Expanded Functions Dental Assistant | EFDA | Part Time Wednesday/Thursday
Meister Dental Group | Fairfield, OH
Meister Dental Group is looking for an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant to join our growing practice. This position is in our Fairfield, OH office, and would cover the following hours:
Wed: 7:30a-5p
Thurs: 7:30a-3:30p

At Meister Dental Group, the EFDA is more than an assistant. You are a trusted clinical partner, a patient comfort champion, and one of the steady hands that helps the day run smoothly. You help create the experience patients remember: organized care, clear communication, kind support, and a team that works together with purpose.
This role is a great fit for someone who is clinically skilled, positive, dependable, and ready to be part of a team that takes patient care seriously without taking itself too seriously.
Why this role matters
A great dental visit does not happen by accident. It takes preparation, teamwork, attention to detail, and a clinical team that knows how to keep the day moving while still making each patient feel cared for.
As an EFDA, you will support the doctor chairside, place restorations within your scope, help maintain excellent clinical flow, and make sure patients feel comfortable and confident throughout their visit. You are part technician, part teammate, part patient translator, and part calm-in-the-chair wizard.
What You'll Do
Day-to-day responsibilities include:
  • Assisting the doctor during a variety of dental procedures
  • Placing restorations and performing EFDA duties within your licensed scope of practice
  • Preparing treatment rooms, instruments, materials, and equipment for procedures
  • Supporting efficient patient flow and helping the clinical team stay on schedule
  • Taking necessary records, radiographs, impressions, or scans as needed and permitted by training/certification
  • Educating patients on treatment, post-op instructions, and oral health recommendations
  • Helping patients feel comfortable, informed, and cared for from start to finish
  • Maintaining accurate clinical documentation
  • Following infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and practice safety standards
  • Sterilizing instruments and maintaining clean, organized clinical spaces
  • Communicating clearly with doctors, hygienists, assistants, front office team members, and leadership
  • Supporting inventory awareness and helping ensure clinical supplies are ready when needed
  • Jumping in where needed to support the team and the patient experience
What We're Looking For
You may be a great fit if you have:
  • Current EFDA certification/licensure in Ohio
  • Dental assisting experience
  • Radiology certification, if applicable
  • Strong clinical skills and attention to detail
  • A positive, professional, and service-oriented attitude
  • The ability to stay organized in a busy clinical environment
  • Strong communication skills with patients and team members
  • A team-first mindset and willingness to help where needed
  • Comfort using dental software and digital systems
  • A dependable, patient-focused approach to your work
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay
  • Dental coverage for team members and immediate family
  • 401(k)
  • Paid time off
  • Opportunities for professional growth and continued learning
  • A supportive team environment where your clinical skills genuinely matter
Our Values
At Seva Dental Team, we are Driven by Purpose and Defined by Service. We believe great care starts with great teams, and great teams are built by people who show up for each other, solve problems, and take pride in the details.
Our core values guide how we work:
  • Win as a Team
  • Be the Solution
  • Better Every Day
  • Serve with a Smile
If you are an EFDA who loves patient care, takes pride in excellent clinical work, and wants to be part of a team that values both skill and kindness, we would love to meet you.
