Job Summary:
The Clinical Revenue and Research Data Analyst is a skilled data and information management professional with expertise in data analysis, SQL query development, Tableau, and programming languages such as Python. This role requires experience or a strong interest in leveraging AI and other emerging technologies to enhance data insights and operational efficiency. This position will play a key role in supporting the Department of Medicine (DOM) clinical enterprise through data analysis and data management. The analyst is responsible for delivering accurate, reliable, and well-structured data to a diverse group of stakeholders. This includes validating data across multiple sources, identifying inconsistencies, and streamlining data request processes to improve accessibility and usability.
The Clinical Revenue and Research Data Analyst will report to the Project and Product Manager for the Department of Medicine Portals Team and the Director of Research Administration & Revenue Management. This person will provide support for three main areas: clinical revenue, research analytics, and financial internal controls.
The incumbent must be proficient in designing queries and managing a diverse set of data to answer business questions. The incumbent will work collaboratively with stakeholders to assess high-priority business questions, evaluate available data sources, help design and implement reports and visualizations to answer these questions, and perform data validation to ensure accuracy. The individual is expected to leverage AI (e.g., custom GPTs) and API-based solutions to design and operationalize intelligent, automated data workflows, and to drive scalable improvements across departmental data processes.
The Clinical Revenue and Research Data Analyst will support the department's clinical mission by investigating questions related to clinical revenue and physician productivity. They will also gather data and develop charts and reports to enable the department to evaluate the success of the department's research mission. Finally, the Clinical Revenue and Research Data Analyst will play a key role in strengthening the department's internal controls. The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The DOM has an annual budget of $726M across three sites with ~3,000 employees and trainees. The DOM comprises 22% of all UCSF faculty, 26% of the SOM's faculty, and 20% of the SOM budget. The DOM has consistently ranked among the top departments of medicine in the country.

  • Provide existing data sources for DOM-wide clinical revenue management

  • Analyze provider productivity in selected Divisions to understand which providers are earning < 80% the division average for wRVUs per session

  • Compile and manage data necessary to evaluate the state of DOM research at regular intervals.
  • Assist with ad-hoc requests to answer questions about the department's research mission from Division Chiefs, the Associate Chairs of Research and other stakeholders
  • Assist with the development and validation of PRISM reports related to the research mission.

  • Compile and monitor overdrafts across the department and all fund groups including sponsored projects, operating funds, gifts and the default payroll account.
  • Coordinate outreach to department finance analysts who oversee projects in deficit and gather information and resolution plans.
  • Develop comprehensive financial risk analysis for the department's UCSF Health divisions.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and minimum three years experience / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in data analytics, data management, or related
  • Thorough knowledge of data management systems, practices, and standards.
  • Thorough knowledge of business intelligence functions, analytics, industry standards and best practices
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems
  • Strong skills in data analysis and queries using Microsoft Excel and SQL
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization

  • Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management
  • Experience working at an academic medical center
  • Prior experience supporting research in an academic environment
