Position Summary

The School of Health and Wellness is seeking a passionate and learner-focused Instructor - Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant Diploma - Recreation Therapist to join our team.

As an instructor in the Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistant Diploma, you will bring your professional expertise and passion for education into the classroom and beyond. You will provide engaging, learner-centered instruction, assess learner progress, contribute to curriculum development, and support students in achieving the learning outcomes of their courses and program.

This role offers the opportunity to teach in a variety of environments, including in-person, online, blended, synchronous and workplace settings. You will work collaboratively with colleagues and industry partners to ensure learning remains relevant, current and connected to professional practice.

What You'll Be Doing:

Deliver Engaging, High-Quality Instruction

You will plan and deliver courses as assigned, using a range of instructional strategies to support diverse learner needs and promote active learning. You will develop lesson plans and instructional materials, contribute to the development and continuous improvement of curriculum, guides and assessment rubrics, and ensure course content reflects current practices within recreation therapy and the broader health care environment.

You will evaluate learner performance throughout the course, provide meaningful feedback, maintain accurate student records and communicate learner progress as required. You will be comfortable adapting your teaching approach across a variety of delivery formats and learning environments.

Create a Positive and Supportive Learning Experience

You will play an important role in creating an inclusive learning environment where students feel supported and equipped to succeed. This includes addressing learner concerns related to attendance, conduct and academic performance, identifying when additional support or follow-up is required, and connecting students with appropriate College resources such as tutoring and counselling.

You will also support individualized learner accommodations and ensure approved accommodations are appropriately implemented. As part of the broader College community, you may participate in activities that promote learner success, including orientation, graduation, and scholarship and bursary activities.

Build Connections with Industry and the Community

You will help ensure the program remains connected to current recreation therapy practice and the evolving needs of employers. You will maintain your professional knowledge, identify changes in best practice and contribute to curriculum updates that keep learning relevant to the field.

Building strong relationships will be an important part of the role. You may engage with industry stakeholders, participate on advisory committees and attend community meetings, recruitment events and other activities that promote the program and College. You will also maintain meaningful relationships with employers of Interdisciplinary Therapy Assistants to strengthen connections between education and employment.

Contribute to the College Community

Beyond teaching, you will contribute to the ongoing development of the program and School of Health and Wellness. You will support articulation and transfer activities, participate in applied research where appropriate, complete required professional development and training, and follow all College policies and procedures.

You may also be called upon to contribute to special projects and other duties that support the success of learners, the program and the College.

You bring current industry knowledge, strong communication skills and the ability to engage learners with diverse backgrounds, experiences and learning needs.

You are adaptable and comfortable teaching across face-to-face, online, blended, synchronous and workplace environments. You use a learner-centered approach, provide constructive feedback and create an inclusive environment that encourages students to participate, develop confidence and achieve their learning goals.

You also bring strong relationship-building skills and a commitment to the profession. You are able to establish productive relationships with industry and community partners, stay current with emerging practices, and contribute to curriculum development and program improvement. A commitment to professional development and applied research is also valued.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation (or equivalent degree program)

  • 5 years of therapeutic recreation experience

  • Member of the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association

  • Police information check including a vulnerable sector

  • Ability to work to full scope of practice

  • An equivalent combination of directly related education and experience may be considered

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Teaching experience an asset

  • Curriculum development an asset

  • Industry relationships is an asset

  • Strong understanding of the role of the Therapy Assistant

Please note all successful candidates will be required to provide copies of government issued identification and proof of educational qualifications upon hire and may be required to provide an enhanced police information check.
