What is an editorial makeup?

An Editorial Makeup job involves creating artistic and high-fashion makeup looks for magazine shoots, runway shows, advertising campaigns, and other media projects. Unlike everyday or bridal makeup, editorial makeup focuses on creativity, bold concepts, and trendsetting designs. Makeup artists in this field collaborate with photographers, stylists, and models to bring a specific vision to life. Attention to detail, adaptability, and a strong portfolio are essential for success in this industry.

What does an editorial makeup artist do?

A typical day for an Editorial Makeup Artist often involves preparing for and working on photo shoots, fashion shows, or commercial projects. You'll collaborate closely with photographers, stylists, models, and creative directors to design and apply looks that align with the artistic vision of the project. Expect to spend time on set making adjustments, staying ready for touch-ups, and adapting to last-minute changes, especially in high-paced shoot settings. The role requires both creative input and practical execution, making each day dynamic and varied. Many makeup artists enjoy the collaborative atmosphere and the opportunity to see their work featured in high-profile publications or campaigns.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in editorial makeup, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editorial Makeup Artist, you need advanced makeup artistry skills, a strong creative portfolio, and experience working in editorial, fashion, or commercial photo shoots. Proficiency with professional makeup kits, airbrushing tools, and familiarity with sanitation standards are typically required, and certifications from reputable beauty schools are often preferred. Excellent communication, adaptability, and the ability to interpret creative briefs help set top professionals apart. These skills and qualifications are crucial for producing innovative, high-quality looks that align with editorial visions and thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments.

How much does an editorial makeup artist make?

The average salary for an editorial makeup artist ranges from $40,000 to $70,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and the scope of projects. Freelance artists may have variable income based on assignments, while those working for magazines or brands often have steady pay and benefits.

How to get into editorial makeup?

To pursue a career in editorial makeup, build a strong portfolio showcasing creative and diverse looks, gain experience through internships or assisting established makeup artists, and develop skills in color theory, skincare, and makeup application. Staying current with industry trends and mastering professional tools like brushes and high-quality products are also important.

Job description

Description
THE PURPOSE: The Senior Studio Producer owns the planning and execution of every production that comes through True Religion's studio. This role is responsible for building production calendars, managing budgets, staffing shoots, and ensuring that e-commerce PDP, editorial campaigns, seasonal content, social-first projects, and video are all delivered on time and to the highest creative standard. It is the operational and financial backbone of the creative team - the person who makes sure nothing falls through the cracks and everything ships.

THE ROLE (what you are accountable for):
  • Own all studio production across e-commerce PDP, editorial campaigns, seasonal brand content, social-first content, video, and special creative projects
  • Build and manage the annual production calendar, shoot schedules, and timelines across multiple simultaneous productions
  • Own production budgets from planning through reconciliation, tracking estimates, purchase orders, invoices, and cost reporting while identifying savings without compromising creative quality
  • Negotiate rates with photographers, stylists, hair and makeup artists, models, studios, and production vendors
  • Ensure all call sheets, shot lists, and production documents are complete and distributed before every shoot
  • Lead pre-production planning, production meetings, and day-of operations across all studio shoots
  • Partner with Creative Direction to execute seasonal vision, and source the photographers, directors, talent, and locations needed to bring it to life
  • Oversee post-production delivery, tracking retouching workflows and ensuring all assets hit launch deadlines
  • Partner cross-functionally with Creative, Art Direction, Styling, Merchandising, Marketing, E-Commerce, Retouching, Design, and Finance
  • Develop and continuously improve studio workflows and SOPs
YOU ARE: An experienced producer who knows how to keep a high-volume creative studio at full capacity without sacrificing quality. You have owned significant budgets, navigated tight timelines, and built the kind of cross-functional relationships that make productions actually work. You are solutions-first, calm under pressure, and skilled at getting the most out of every dollar and every crew member.

REQUIRED MINIMUM EXPERIENCE
  • 8-10+ years of production experience, with 5+ years producing high-volume fashion e-commerce
  • Proven experience managing large-scale in-house studio operations and freelance crews
  • Strong budget management skills, including estimates, purchase orders, invoice tracking, and cost reconciliation
  • Demonstrated vendor negotiation experience across photography, talent, and production services
  • Deep understanding of photo and video production workflows
  • Experience with casting and talent booking
  • Exceptional project management skills with the ability to run multiple productions simultaneously
  • Proven track record building and maintaining strong partnerships across cross-functional creative teams
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Background in fashion, apparel, or lifestyle brand production
  • Experience with seasonal editorial campaigns and retail marketing productions
  • On-figure and laydown photography production experience
  • Video production experience
