Job Overview:
The Senior Managing Editor, Content and Test Development provides strategic and operational leadership for assessment content and production editorial teams. Accountable for editorial quality across the full assessment lifecycle-from item development through final production, including ancillary materials-while advancing AI-enabled editorial workflows to improve efficiency, consistency, and scalability.
Job Responsibilities:
Editorial Leadership
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of assessment content and production editors, including workload planning, cross-training, and performance coaching.
  • Establish clear workflows and handoffs between content, production, and editorial teams; provide escalation support on complex style and content issues.

Assessment Content Editing
  • Oversee editorial review of test items, passages, graphics, item development plans, performance-level descriptors, manuals, and technical documentation.
  • Enforce Chicago, APA, and AP style alongside state-specific style guides.

Production Editing & QA
  • Direct production editing for paper-based and digital materials: test books, ancillary materials, reports, and operational documentation.
  • Oversee proofreading, version control, and final quality checks prior to release or submission.

AI-Enabled Editorial Innovation
  • Lead responsible adoption of AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude, Grammarly Business, Writer) for copyediting, style compliance, and QA while preserving human editorial judgment.
  • Assist in the development of internal guidelines for ethical, secure AI use, train editors on consistent tool usage.
  • Implement workflow automation (e.g., Power Automate, SharePoint) and AI-powered document comparison for version control and error detection.

Operations & Collaboration
  • Design scalable workflows supporting high-volume, concurrent deadlines; track quality and turnaround metrics to drive continuous improvement.
  • Contribute editorial expertise to proposals, staffing models, and resourcing plans. Serve as a trusted editorial advisor to leadership, project teams, and clients.

Job Requirements:
  • Master's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field.
  • 15+ years of professional editing experience, including educational assessment, test development, or complex technical publishing.
  • Demonstrated people management experience in deadline-driven environments.
  • Exceptional command of Chicago, APA, and AP style; experience editing assessment items, technical reports, and high-stakes testing content.
  • Proven experience using AI tools to support and improve editorial workflows.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills; flexibility during peak production periods
