What Are Different Kinds of Editing Jobs?

There are several different categories of editing jobs, including developmental editing, copy editing, and proofreading. There are also visual editing jobs, such as film or television editing. All of these jobs come with different responsibilities and duties. As a developmental editor, for example, you work closely with an author or writer to flesh out a novel or book. You read rough drafts and provide extensive notes and constructive criticism about character development, narrative structure, and other elements, and assist the writer to publish the manuscript.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editor, you need strong language proficiency, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of grammar, style guides, and editorial standards, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing software like Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and content management systems is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and collaboration skills help editors work effectively with writers and other stakeholders. These competencies ensure content accuracy, consistency, and quality, which are crucial for maintaining publication standards and audience trust.

What are some common challenges editors face when working with multiple writers on a project?

Editors who collaborate with multiple writers often encounter challenges such as maintaining a consistent tone and style across different sections, ensuring deadlines are met by all contributors, and managing varying skill levels or writing approaches. Effective communication and clear editorial guidelines are essential to streamline the process. Editors may also need to provide constructive feedback and mediate creative differences to produce a cohesive final product.

What is editing and what does an editor do?

Editing is the process of reviewing and revising content to improve clarity, accuracy, and overall quality before publication or distribution. An editor checks for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency, and may also reorganize sections to enhance flow and readability. Depending on the field, editors may work on books, articles, videos, or other media, collaborating closely with writers and creators to ensure the final product meets professional standards.

What jobs can you do with editing?

Editing skills can lead to jobs such as copy editor, content editor, video editor, technical editor, and proofreader. These roles involve reviewing and improving written or visual content for clarity, accuracy, and style, often requiring proficiency with editing software and strong attention to detail.

What is the difference between Editing vs Copywriting?

Job description

We're in this for the greater good at ParetoHealth. Our mission is collective greatness, nothing less will do. Our team is a single force united in the drive to transform employee health benefits.

The company was founded in 2011 to help small and medium-sized businesses fight the rising cost of employee health benefits. We blazed the trail with financing innovations that reduce the risks in self-insurance and deliver significant savings—and we continue to lead with a growing ecosystem of partners and world-class cost control solutions.

But success is measured by more than dollars alone and we measure ours by the good that comes from knowing that every client and all their employees can count on effective, affordable healthcare for years to come.

Please note that ParetoHealth does not provide employment visa sponsorship for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship both now or in the future.

Position Summary:

Join our fight for the greater good. At ParetoHealth, we're on a mission to make healthcare spend less volatile and more affordable for small and mid-sized businesses. With over 4,000 employer members covering nearly 1.2 million Americans, we are the nation's largest and fastest-growing employer-owned health benefits solution.

ParetoHealth is seeking an Art Director to serve as a senior individual contributor responsible for elevating creative quality, leading complex deliverables, and building scalable design systems. This role combines hands-on execution, project leadership, and mentorship, helping the Design function operate with clarity, consistency, and impact.

Reporting to the Head of Design, this role does not include people management but does require the ability to lead projects, set creative direction, and mentor a Senior Graphic Designer while remaining deeply involved in execution.

This role is based in Center City Philadelphia, with the option to work remotely 2–3 days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead high-impact creative execution

  • Own and lead delivery of complex, high-visibility creative work, including:
  • Long-form content such as white papers, reports, and playbooks
  • Executive presentations for senior leadership and external audiences
  • Brand, campaign, and case-study storytelling assets
  • Translate abstract or complex concepts into clear, compelling visual narratives (including infographics and industry reports) that communicate a strong point of view.
  • Serve as creative lead on priority initiatives in partnership with Marketing, Events, and Content teams.

Web design & UI/UX-driven experiences

  • Lead visual design for marketing websites and landing pages supporting campaign, growth, and educational initiatives.
  • Apply strong UI/UX principles, including visual hierarchy, usability, accessibility, and responsive design.
  • Design within and extend existing design systems across web and digital touchpoints.
  • Partner with developers and cross-functional stakeholders to translate requirements into high-quality, feasible designs.

Video, motion & visual storytelling

  • Lead hands-on execution of video and motion initiatives, including storyboarding, concept development, and hands-on editing and motion design.
  • Establish quality standards and best practices for video and motion content across the team.

Design systems & scalability

  • Build, maintain, and evolve scalable design systems, templates, and component libraries across events, sales enablement, and digital campaigns.
  • Establish clear design standards, review practices, and workflows that reduce rework and increase speed.
  • Identify and apply process improvements, automation, and AI-assisted workflows to improve efficiency and consistency.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of multidisciplinary design experience (B2B or complex subject matter preferred).
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating long-form content, executive presentations, web and digital design, video/motion work, and data visualization or analytical storytelling.
  • Strong experience designing for web and digital platforms, with a solid understanding of UI/UX best practices, responsive design, and accessibility.
  • Working experience with video editing and motion graphics (advanced skills a plus).
  • Proven ability to lead projects end to end as a senior individual contributor.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort partnering with senior stakeholders.
  • Experience building and evolving design systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and PowerPoint.

Perks & Benefits:

  • Fully paid medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • Flexible PTO
  • 401k company contribution
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Professional development allowance
  • Transportation allowance and daily parking reimbursement
  • Engaging hybrid work environment
We are guided by our values:

Fire in the belly

The drive to learn, to improve, and to deliver outstanding value every day.

See the field

The ability to see the big picture and prepare to meet tomorrow's needs.

Get it done right

The passion to produce at higher rates and to the highest standards.

For the greater good

A united community creating better health benefit solutions for all.
