What is an editing intern?

Editing Interns are entry-level team members who assist editors in reviewing, revising, and preparing written content for publication. They often work for publishing houses, magazines, media companies, or online platforms, gaining practical experience in editing, proofreading, and content management. Editing Interns may also help with fact-checking, formatting, and learning editorial standards. Their role is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in the publishing industry and build a professional network.

What kinds of projects can an editing intern expect to work on, and how are assignments typically managed?

As an Editing Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects such as proofreading articles, assisting with content revisions, and fact-checking drafts before publication. Assignments are usually managed through editorial calendars or project management tools, and you’ll often collaborate closely with writers, senior editors, and sometimes the design team. Interns are encouraged to communicate openly about workload and deadlines, and you may have the chance to pitch ideas or take ownership of smaller projects as you gain experience. This hands-on exposure helps you develop both technical editing skills and an understanding of editorial workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an editing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editing Intern, you need a strong grasp of grammar, punctuation, and style guidelines, often supported by coursework in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with editing tools like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and track changes features is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and good communication skills help you stand out when collaborating with writers and senior editors. These skills ensure content is polished, error-free, and meets publication standards within deadlines.
