What is eDiscovery?

eDiscovery, or electronic discovery, is the process of identifying, collecting, and producing electronically stored information (ESI) for use as evidence in legal cases. This can include emails, documents, databases, social media, and other digital data. eDiscovery professionals use specialized tools and techniques to ensure that relevant information is preserved, reviewed, and shared in a legally compliant manner. The process is critical in modern litigation and regulatory investigations where digital evidence plays a key role.

What is an eDiscovery job?

E-discovery jobs focus on using technology to search data and records for electronically stored information (ESI), usually in response to a legal issue or an investigation. As part of this job, you may cull data using advanced search techniques, preserve data for later use, utilize write blocking software to prevent the destruction of forensic images, maintain a chain of custody, and otherwise ensure the integrity of ESI to ensure it is admissible in a court of law. Electronic discovery jobs are commonly available with law firms or on corporate cybersecurity teams. There may also be positions open with companies that deal with a lot of litigation and need to collect and preserve various types of information.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an eDiscovery professional?

To thrive as an Ediscovery professional, you need a solid understanding of legal procedures, electronic evidence handling, and information governance, often supported by a degree in law, information technology, or a related field. Familiarity with eDiscovery platforms such as Relativity, Concordance, or Nuix, and certifications like ACEDS are highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and clear communication help professionals efficiently manage large volumes of data and collaborate with legal teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring compliant, defensible, and effective management of electronic evidence in legal matters.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in eDiscovery roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in eDiscovery often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of electronically stored information (ESI), meeting tight deadlines, and ensuring data security and compliance with legal standards. Effective use of eDiscovery software, strong organizational skills, and ongoing training in legal and technological developments can help address these challenges. Collaboration with IT, legal teams, and external vendors is also crucial to streamline workflows and mitigate risks associated with data processing and review.

What is the difference between Ediscovery vs Legal Technologist?

AspectEdiscoveryLegal Technologist
Required CredentialsLegal or IT certifications, e.g., CLE, CIPP, or technical certificationsLegal or IT certifications, often including CLE or technical certifications
Work EnvironmentLaw firms, corporate legal departments, e-discovery vendorsLaw firms, legal departments, technology firms
Industry UsagePrimarily in litigation, compliance, and regulatory casesLegal technology implementation, process optimization, and support

While both roles involve legal technology, Ediscovery focuses on managing electronic evidence for litigation, whereas Legal Technologists implement and support legal tech solutions. Understanding these differences helps professionals choose the right career path or specialization.

Is ediscovery a good career?

Ediscovery is a growing field within legal and IT industries that involves managing electronic data for legal cases. It requires skills in data analysis, legal procedures, and familiarity with tools like Relativity or Concordance. The career offers opportunities for advancement and specialization, often with competitive salaries and demand for experienced professionals.

What qualifications do I need for ediscovery?

Ediscovery professionals typically need a bachelor's degree in fields like law, information technology, or computer science. Knowledge of e-discovery tools, data management, and legal procedures is important, and certifications such as Certified E-Discovery Specialist (CEDS) can enhance job prospects.

Job description

Lumen is the trusted network for the AIpowered world, connecting people, data, and applications through our expansive fiber network and connected ecosystem. We enable secure, highperformance connectivity across cloud, edge, and AI workloads for enterprises, governments, and communities.

At Lumen, you'll work on infrastructure customers rely on today and build for what's next, where performance, security, and resilience matter.

This is a high accountability environment where bold ideas drive real innovation for our customers, partners, and industry. The work is challenging, expectations are clear, and trust is built into how we operate. If you're ready to take ownership, deliver meaningful impact, and help shape the future of AIready connectivity, join us today.

The Role

This Director-level role in Global Security Services leads and matures Lumen's Investigations and Innovation program - a primarily virtual team of 25 to 30 skilled advanced cyber investigators, certified digital forensics professionals, Red Team / Pen testers, and innovation engineers.

As an industry disrupter, Lumen sets the bar high. This leader drives the research and incubation of emerging security capabilities enterprise-wide, sustaining the established program while boldly leading in new directions; a security-practitioner background is preferred. The role is cross-functional, partnering with the Cyber Fusion Center, Cyber Incident Response Team, Black Lotus Labs, Fraud Management, Physical Security, Legal, and SMEs across IT, Network, and Product. The work is challenging and the pace intense, but trust is how we operate - so the right leader thrives where every challenge is a chance to innovate and we win together.

Location

This is a remote postion open to candidates based anywhere in the US.

The Main Responsibilities

1. Advanced Cyber Investigations & Digital Forensics

  • Run a world-class digital investigations and forensics capability staffed by certified professionals.
  • Lead complex intrusion, insider-threat, and incident investigations across all Lumen environments.
  • Ensure forensically sound evidence acquisition, preservation, chain of custody, and data recovery.
  • Deliver clear, defensible findings and metrics to stakeholders.

2. Litigation, Legal & Law Enforcement Support

  • Provide expert investigations and legal support: e-discovery, legal hold, and response to subpoenas and demands.
  • Serve as trusted liaison to Legal, HR, and external law enforcement.
  • Maintain evidentiary standards for legal, regulatory, and litigation proceedings.

3. Innovation & Emerging Capabilities

  • Research, pilot, and prove emerging security technologies - AI/ML security, automation, and next-gen tooling - where bold ideas drive real innovation.
  • Incubate new detection, threat-hunting, and defensive capabilities into repeatable programs.
  • Partner with Security Engineering and the Cyber Fusion Center to operationalize innovations at scale.

4. Threat Hunting

  • Mature a program of hypothesis-driven threat hunts.
  • Ingest new and emerging threats, including 0-day vulnerabilities.
  • Pivot rapidly based on real and hypothetical threat-actor activity.

5. Red Team

  • Run Adversarial Cyber Emulation (ACE) engagements against Lumen's incident response teams.
  • Lead Purple Team exercises in collaboration with incident response.
  • Conduct penetration tests of targeted applications by risk or compliance.

6. Engineering of Detection & Response Security Controls

  • Choose the right security technology with Security Architecture.
  • Cover Detection & Response across Endpoint, Network, and AI.
  • Configure the Lumen security stack for cross-platform cohesion.
  • Tune the log-ingest and SIEM platform so responders can 'defend Lumen.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Establish investigative processes, standards, and evidentiary rigor.
  • Develop a training and certification framework so the team can build, learn, and lead.
  • Drive tooling requirements and assess existing technologies.
  • Hire, develop, and grow team members with flexibility, care, and opportunity.
  • Lead Manager and Sr. Manager personnel; identify, develop, and delegate assigned projects.
  • Continually realign services with business and product needs, where every voice guides our future.
  • Advance the growing security operations organization - we win together.
  • Build strong relationships with colleagues, peers, clients, and vendors.
