What does an EDI software engineer do?

An EDI Software Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining systems that enable the electronic exchange of business documents between organizations. They work with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) standards, map data between internal applications and trading partners, and ensure the secure and accurate transfer of data. Their role often involves troubleshooting EDI issues, integrating new partners, and collaborating with IT and business teams to streamline business processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI software engineer?

To thrive as an EDI Software Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, data integration, and experience with EDI standards such as X12, EDIFACT, or XML. Familiarity with EDI mapping tools, translation software, and integration platforms like IBM Sterling or Dell Boomi, as well as knowledge of relevant programming languages, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication enable efficient troubleshooting and collaboration with business partners. These competencies are essential for ensuring seamless data exchange, system reliability, and compliance with trading partner requirements.

Strong communication skills are essential, as you’ll need to translate technical concepts for non-technical colleagues and resolve issues that impact multiple departments.
