What is an edge computing job?

Edge computing jobs involve developing, deploying, and maintaining technology that processes data closer to where it is generated, rather than relying on centralized data centers or cloud computing. Professionals in this field work on optimizing network performance, building edge devices, ensuring data security, and enabling real-time analytics for industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and telecommunications. Typical roles include edge software engineers, network architects, and IoT specialists. These jobs require knowledge of distributed systems, networking, and often experience with hardware integration.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an edge computing engineer?

To thrive as an Edge Computing Engineer, you need expertise in distributed systems, networking, cloud/edge infrastructure, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), IoT platforms, and edge-specific frameworks such as Azure IoT Edge or AWS Greengrass is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help drive innovation and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable edge solutions that process data efficiently and securely at the network's edge.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in edge computing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in edge computing roles often face challenges such as ensuring seamless data processing across distributed devices, maintaining network reliability, and implementing robust security measures for decentralized systems. Additionally, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—including IoT engineers, cloud architects, and cybersecurity experts—is vital to address integration and performance issues. Staying updated on evolving edge technologies and industry best practices can help professionals navigate these challenges and deliver efficient, secure solutions.

What is the difference between Edge vs Network Technician?

Common Search/ComparisonEdge vs Network Technician

The main difference between Edge and Network Technician roles lies in their focus areas. Edge professionals specialize in deploying and managing edge computing devices and infrastructure at remote or distributed locations, often requiring knowledge of edge-specific hardware and security. Network Technicians primarily focus on maintaining and troubleshooting network infrastructure within organizations or data centers. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Edge roles emphasize distributed computing environments, whereas Network Technicians concentrate on core network systems.

Job description

Eaton is seeking an Edge Offer Manager to define and drive the enterprise technology roadmap for connected hardware and edge computing capabilities across our portfolio. This position can be based at one of our offices in Beachwood, OH, Menomonee Falls, WI, Moon Township, PA, or Raleigh, NC. Candidates must be based in one of these locations as relocation assistance is not available.

Some travel is expected (10-25%). The expected annual salary range for this role is $146000 - $215000 a year. This position is also eligible for a variable incentive program.

Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations. This Offer Manager will manage the enterprise technology roadmap for Brightlayer Edge and Brightlayer Ready to enable secure, scalable, and reusable connected hardware and edge compute capabilities across Eaton's electrical infrastructure portfolio while incorporating third party equipment into the edge compute strategy.

This role sits at the intersection of physical products, embedded software, edge platforms, and software connectivity. The Edge Offer Manager is responsible for ensuring that our devices, systems, and software deliver secure, scalable, and differentiated edge capabilities that support enterprise use cases such as monitoring, control, analytics, resilience, and AI enabled operations. This role is responsible for defining how Eaton devices, systems, and controllers participate in the Brightlayer ecosystem, from embedded connectivity and edge compute through local analytics and secure software integration.

The Edge Offer Manager ensures that Brightlayer delivers consistent edge capabilities that can be leveraged across use cases in Data Centers, Industrial, and Utilities. What you'll do: Brightlayer Edge Strategy & Roadmap Own the Brightlayer Edge technology roadmap, aligned with Eaton's digital and hardware product strategies. Define how connected hardware, edge software, and cloud services work together within the Brightlayer architecture.

Establish a clear point of view on what runs at the edge vs. in software (on-prem or cloud), and why, across various use cases. Connected Hardware & Edge Capabilities Define and evolve core Brightlayer Edge capabilities, including: o Device connectivity and industrial protocols (e.g., MQTT, Modbus, OPC UA, IEC standards) along with UNS, device models, semantics, eClass capabilites o Secure device onboarding, identity, and lifecycle management o Local data normalization, buffering, and rules execution o Edge analytics and event processing o Edge AI / ML inference (where appropriate for power and industrial use cases) Partner with hardware and firmware teams to ensure new Eaton products are Brightlayer Ready by design

Platform & Architecture Alignment Work closely with Brightlayer architecture, cybersecurity, and engineering teams to translate product strategy into reference architectures and platform components. Drive alignment across Brightlayer domains (Edge, Connectivity, Cloud, Applications) to reduce fragmentation. Ensure edge capabilities meet OT reliability, latency, and security requirements, not just IT expectations.

Cross Business Enablement Act as the single owner for edge capabilities used by multiple Eaton businesses. Collaborate with product teams across EPMS, DCIM, Power, Energy, Predictive Maintenance, and Industrial solutions to understand needs and drive common solutions. Balance enterprise standardization with flexibility for business specific requirements.

Customer & Market Insight Translate customer and field feedback into edge requirements grounded in real operational constraints (power continuity, optimization, safety, cybersecurity, air gapped environments). Monitor competitive and adjacent ecosystems (industrial IoT platforms, edge vendors, hyperscaler edge offerings). Ensure Brightlayer Edge capabilities support Eaton's outcome based value propositions (resilience, efficiency, safety, sustainability).

Execution & Outcomes Own epics and capability backlogs for Brightlayer Edge. Partner with program management and engineering to ensure roadmap execution and dependency management. Define and track success metrics such as: o Adoption of Brightlayer Edge across product lines o Reuse of edge components vs.

bespoke implementations o Time to market improvement for connected products o Reliability, performance, and security posture at the edge Qualifications: Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Minimum 8 years of experience in product management, platform strategy, or systems engineering. Proven experience delivering connected products, embedded systems, or edge platforms in industrial or infrastructure environments.

For candidates in the US: Eaton will not consider applicants for employment immigration sponsorship or support for this position. This means that Eaton will not support any CPT, OPT, or STEM OPT plans, F-1 to H-1B, H-1B cap registration, O-1, E-3, TN status, I-485 job portability, etc. Preferred Qualifications Experience in electrical infrastructure, power systems, data centers, or industrial automation.

Familiarity with EPMS, DCIM, BMS, SCADA, or OT systems. Experience defining secure device lifecycle management in regulated or safety critical environments. Exposure to edge analytics or AI enabled industrial use cases.

Experience working with or integrating into enterprise digital platforms. Experience within a multinational organization and working across global time zones. Skills Strong understanding of edge computing, device to cloud architectures, and industrial communication protocols.

Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, multi business enterprise. Strong technical fluency and credibility with engineering, architecture, and cybersecurity teams. All positions may require participation in video and in-person interviews as part of the hiring process.
