Salary Range: The full pay range for this role is $107,200 - $178,600 annually, and the good faith estimated starting pay for this position upon hire is $135,000 - $155,000 annually. We generally base our salary decisions on factors including but not limited to, relevant work and leadership experience, education, demonstrated performance, internal equity, and in some cases, geographic location.

Scope of Job:

The Senior Substation Engineer is responsible for leading all aspects of substation across the full portfolio of EDF's renewable projects in North America, ensuring that substation designs meet company requirements, utility standards, and applicable codes.

Work Mode: Hybrid, based in San Diego, CA or Montreal, Quebec. 3 days onโ€‘site.

Responsibilities
  • Project substation and transmission line engineering:

    • Serve as the subject matter expert for substation and highโ€‘voltage engineering, including physical design, protection and control design, major equipment specifications and electrical design studies such as power flow, shortโ€‘circuit and protection coordination.
    • Provide technical leadership and resolution for all substationโ€‘related design issues during project implementation.
    • Support transmission line design, interconnection applications, and related engineering activities as required. Develop design criteria and technical specifications; prepare/review internal engineering deliverables, such as singleโ€‘line diagrams and electrical studies.
    • Ensure EDF's technical specifications remain aligned with evolving industry best practices.
    • Coordinate external electrical engineering resources required to support the projects workload and supplement internal technical activities.
    • Support technical review of procurement packages, vendor submittals, and evaluations for major HV equipment such as power transformers, HV breakers.
    • Coordinate project design with engineers within and outside EDF's engineering group. Support other departments, including construction and O&M, on substation design matters such as lessons learned and specification changes.
    • Provide project engineering management support on select projects as needed.
    • Actively participate in external technical seminars.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: 85% of time is spent in the office environment, utilizing computers (frequent use of various Microsoft software/programs), phones, and general office equipment.

Approximately 15% of the time is spent in the field nationally and internationally, visiting potential and existing projects, recognizing and assessing the sites, and meeting with project team members.

Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s degree in Electrical Engineering.

  • Experience: Minimum 7 years of handsโ€‘on experience in substation design.

  • Licensure: Professional Engineer (PE) License is highly preferred.

Technical Expertise
  • Substation Design: Deep understanding of substation and transmission line equipment, design principles, and the full project lifecycle (from preliminary design to "asโ€‘built" packages).

  • Codes & Standards: Strong command of industry engineering codes and practices to ensure safe, costโ€‘effective, and reliable designs.

  • Software: Proficient with electrical engineering design software such as ETAP, ASPEN, and PSCAD.

Leadership & Execution
  • Problem Solving: Capable of independently diagnosing and resolving complex engineering challenges.

  • Teamwork & Mentorship: Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and lead crossโ€‘functional project tasks.

  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills with strong organizational habits.

  • Process Improvement: Ability to support and drive continuous workflow improvements.

Travel & Physical Requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel: (3โ€“5 days at a time) for site visits, technical team coordination, conferences, or partner meetings.
