How much do eddy current jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 2, 2026, the average hourly pay for eddy current in California is $35.16, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $23.07 and $40.02 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an eddy current?

An Eddy Current job typically involves testing and inspecting materials, primarily metals, for defects using electromagnetic induction. Eddy Current technicians or inspectors use specialized equipment to detect cracks, corrosion, or material inconsistencies in industries like aerospace, manufacturing, and power generation. This non-destructive testing (NDT) method helps ensure structural integrity and safety. Technicians interpret data, prepare reports, and may work in field or laboratory settings. Certification and training are often required to perform Eddy Current testing effectively.

What does an eddy current technician do?

A typical day for an Eddy Current Technician involves preparing and calibrating specialized testing equipment, conducting inspections on components such as pipelines, aircraft parts, or structures, and accurately documenting and reporting findings. You'll work both independently and alongside quality assurance or engineering teams to interpret results and ensure that safety or industry standards are met. The role often requires working at various job sites, adapting to different environments, and sometimes performing follow-up maintenance or retesting if anomalies are detected. This dynamic work environment helps develop technical expertise and provides opportunities for professional growth within the field of nondestructive testing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the eddy current position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Eddy Current Technician, you need a solid understanding of nondestructive testing (NDT) principles, especially eddy current testing methods, typically supported by relevant NDT certifications such as ASNT Level II or III. Familiarity with eddy current testing equipment, signal interpretation software, and industry safety standards is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help technicians work accurately and collaborate with other inspection and engineering personnel. These skills ensure reliable detection of material flaws and compliance with safety and quality standards in various industries.

Job description

Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We've designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We're looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onward toward certifying the Joby aircraft, scaling our manufacturing, and launching our initial commercial service.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a detail-oriented Quality Control Inspector, Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), 1st Shift to perform specialized inspections across our manufacturing, assembly, and component fabrication operations. Reporting to Quality Control leadership, this role is critical to evaluating structural integrity, material soundness, and engineering conformity across composite, metallic, and additively manufactured aircraft parts.
Please note:
  • This single requisition serves as an overarching intake for NDT technical talent across four core inspection modalities: Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Computed Tomography (CT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), and Eddy Current Testing (ET).
  • Candidates do not need to hold active certifications in all four modalities to apply. Applicants will be screened by Talent Acquisition and technical leads to determine appropriate functional placement and level alignment based on certification history, classroom training hours, and hands-on experience.

Responsibilities
  • Inspection Execution: Perform non-destructive evaluations on composite structures, metallic components, additive manufactured parts, and assemblies using one or more primary modalities: Ultrasonic (UT), Computed Tomography (CT), Liquid Penetrant (PT), or Eddy Current (ET).
  • Equipment Setup & Calibration: Set up, calibrate, and standardize NDT equipment, sensors, transducers, probes, and X-ray/CT scanning systems according to written techniques and standard operating procedures.
  • Data Interpretation: Analyze scanning data, A/B/C-scans, 3D CT reconstructions, signal responses, and surface indications against engineering drawings, acceptance criteria, and quality standards.
  • Defect Documentation: Accurately document inspection findings, log results in MES/QMS databases, and generate nonconforming material reports (MRB tags) when discontinuities exceed allowable limits.
  • Method & Technique Support: Collaborate with NDT Engineers, Quality Engineers, and shop-floor teams to assist with technique development, scan plan verification, and defect root-cause investigations.
  • Quality Compliance: Maintain strict compliance with FAA requirements, internal QMS procedures, NADCAP audit guidelines, and NAS 410 written practices.

Required
  • Education & Training: High School Diploma or GED
  • NDT Experience: A minimum of 2+ years practical inspection experience or formal classroom/military training equivalent to NAS 410 in at least one core modality: Ultrasonic (UT), Computed Tomography (CT), Liquid Penetrant (PT), or Eddy Current (ET).
  • Blueprint & Specs: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and material specifications.
  • Quality Standards: Familiarity with industry NDT qualification standards (e.g., NAS 410, ASNT, ASTM).
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency using manufacturing software (ERP/MES), specialized digital NDT analysis tools and Microsoft 365.

Desired
  • Technical diploma, military NDT training program, or Associate's degree preferred.
  • Active or prior NAS 410 certifications (Level I, Level II, or Level III) in UT, CT, PT, or ET.
  • Experience inspecting advanced composite structures (e.g., carbon fiber laminates, honeycomb core), precision aerospace welds, or additive manufacturing components.
  • Hands-on experience with Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT), automated CT reconstruction software, or high-throughput penetrant lines.
  • Familiarity with NADCAP audit processes and FAA Part 21/145 manufacturing environments.
