Job description

An ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) RN (Registered Nurse) is a specialized nurse who provides care for patients who require ECMO treatment, a life-support system used for patients with severe heart or lung failure.
Job Description:

  • Patient Monitoring: Continuously monitor patients undergoing ECMO therapy, ensuring vital signs, oxygenation, and blood flow parameters are within safe limits.
  • ECMO Machine Operation: Assist in the setup, maintenance, and operation of the ECMO machine, ensuring proper function and troubleshooting any issues.
  • Clinical Assessment: Perform regular assessments of patients, including assessing for complications like bleeding, infection, or thrombosis, and document any changes.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, respiratory therapists, and perfusionists, to develop and implement care plans.
  • Patient Care: Administer medications, provide wound care, and support patients through their critical illness while maintaining ECMO therapy.
  • Education and Support: Educate patients and families about ECMO therapy, its purpose, and potential outcomes. Provide emotional support during difficult times.
