Job description

The Earth and Space Science Teacher is responsible for delivering engaging, standards-aligned instruction that develops students’ scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, problem-solving skills, and understanding of Earth systems, climate science, environmental processes, geology, meteorology, astronomy, and sustainability. Instruction aligns with the New York State P–12 Science Learning Standards and Regents expectations while promoting inquiry-based learning, scientific practices, and evidence-based reasoning.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging, rigorous Earth and Space Science lessons aligned with NYS Science Learning Standards and Regents requirements.
  • Facilitate phenomenon-based and inquiry-driven instruction that promotes scientific investigation and evidence-based reasoning.
  • Integrate laboratory investigations, scientific modeling, real-world scientific data, and project-based learning experiences into instruction.
  • Develop lessons that strengthen students’ understanding of Earth systems, geology, weather and climate, astronomy, environmental science, and sustainability.
  • Differentiate instruction to support diverse learners, including multilingual learners and students with disabilities.
  • Develop and administer formative, summative, and performance-based assessments aligned to Regents expectations.
  • Analyze student assessment data to inform instruction and interventions.
  • Maintain accurate academic records and provide meaningful feedback to students.
  • Foster a safe, inquiry-driven, inclusive, and academically challenging classroom and laboratory environment.

     Knowledge and skills 

  • Able to work independently and in a self-reliant manner.
  • Ability to analyze student performance data and adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Ability to facilitate inquiry-based and phenomenon-driven science instruction.
  • Ability to organize tasks, set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to turn best practices into high-quality, goal-driven results.
  • Displays effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with educational technology, laboratory equipment, scientific data resources, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Possesses strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills to communicate with a varied audience.
  • Strong classroom management, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong understanding of scientific practices, laboratory safety procedures, Earth, and Space Science content, and NYSED science standards.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Earth Science, Environmental Science, Geology, Astronomy, Science Education, or related field.
  • NYS Certification in Earth Science or related science certification, or certification in process.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience 

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Master’s Degree in Secondary Science Education or related field.
  • Experience with inquiry-based science instruction and Regent’s preparation preferred.
