The Role

BGC is seeking an Intermediate Civil-Geotechnical Engineer to join our growing team in Alaska. The successful candidate will work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary project teams focused on transportation infrastructure and related civil-geotechnical projects. This role involves technical design, analysis, and field work for projects that include slope stabilization, foundations, and earth retention systems. The ideal candidate will have solid field experience, including geotechnical drilling and construction observation, and will be eligible for professional registration within 1 year of hire.

This position is located in Anchorage, AK. Regular travel to other BGC offices and project locations will be required.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical investigations, analyses, and design for geotechnical-related projects, including slope stabilization, earthworks, foundations, and earth retention systems
  • Prepare technical reports and contribute to proposal development
  • Complete field logs of boreholes in both soil and rock during subsurface investigations
  • Perform field inspections and site visits during construction phases
  • Interpret in-situ and laboratory test results and instrumentation data
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to ensure quality and technical excellence
  • Support project delivery, including budgeting, scheduling, and coordination with internal teams and clients
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff as appropriate

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • 5-8 years of relevant industry experience, or 3-6 years with a master's degree
  • Existing Professional Engineer (PE) designation or eligible for registration as a PE in the USA within 1 year of hire
  • Experience with field investigation techniques such as soil visual-manual descriptions, rock core logging, SPT sampling, CPT soundings, test pits, and geophysical surveys
  • Solid understanding of soil mechanics and geotechnical design principles, including limit equilibrium analysis, ASD and LRFD foundation analysis, and lateral earth pressure and earth retention
  • Familiarity with cold regions engineering principles (frost heave, permafrost, thermal design)
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software such as SLOPE/W, Slide2, RSPile, LPile, PLAXIS, TEMP/W, FLAC, or similar
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Desired Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Master's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering
  • Existing Canadian Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) Registration or eligible for registration for a P.Eng. within 5 years
  • Experience with deep and shallow foundation design (spread footings, driven piles, drilled shafts, micropiles)
  • Experience with rock anchor, bolt or dowel design
  • Exposure to earth retention systems (lateral earth pressure diagrams; design of shoring, soil nail walls, tieback walls, MSE walls)
  • Prior experience in consulting engineering or construction

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

Driver's License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck. Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver's abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

Wage Range

The estimated base salary range for this position is $90,000-$115,000 USD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a discretionary bonus plan, training allowance, and comprehensive medical and dental plan.
