What are common challenges faced by ELB (Elastic Load Balancer) engineers when managing large-scale cloud infrastructure?

ELB engineers often encounter challenges such as configuring load balancers to efficiently distribute traffic under heavy loads, troubleshooting latency or downtime issues, and ensuring secure, seamless integration with other cloud services. They must also stay up-to-date with evolving AWS features, manage cost optimization, and automate scaling to handle fluctuating traffic patterns. Collaboration with development and security teams is frequent to maintain high availability and compliance standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ELB (Elastic Load Balancer) engineer?

To thrive as an ELB Engineer, you need strong expertise in cloud infrastructure (especially AWS), networking concepts, and load balancing principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect. Familiarity with AWS Management Console, CloudFormation, and monitoring tools such as CloudWatch is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you proactively address issues and collaborate with teams. These skills ensure optimal system performance, reliability, and seamless traffic distribution for scalable applications.

Elb (Elastic Load Balancer) specialists focus on configuring and managing load balancing services within cloud environments, ensuring high availability and scalability. Network Engineers design, implement, and maintain network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls. While both roles involve networking concepts, Elb professionals specialize in cloud load balancing, whereas Network Engineers handle broader network architecture and hardware.

What is an ELB?

ELB stands for Elastic Load Balancer, a service provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS) that automatically distributes incoming application or network traffic across multiple targets, such as EC2 instances, containers, and IP addresses. ELBs help improve the availability and fault tolerance of your applications by balancing the load and directing requests to healthy resources. There are different types of ELBs, including Application Load Balancer, Network Load Balancer, and Classic Load Balancer, each suited for specific use cases. Using ELB allows you to scale your applications efficiently and handle varying levels of web traffic.

Job description

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on.

We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
As a Software Development Manager for ELB Data Plane, you will lead a team building the systems that route, scale, and deliver every byte of customer traffic through Elastic Load Balancing

You will own technical vision, drive operational excellence, and grow top engineering talent - all while shipping next-generation capabilities at internet scale.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead a team of engineers in designing, building, and operating ELB data plane systems at massive scale
- Define technical vision and roadmap for data plane capabilities including routing, scaling, and deployment
- Drive operational excellence across the team, maintaining high availability for a service that underpins millions of customer workloads
- Partner with senior AWS leaders, product managers, and cross-functional teams to align on priorities and deliver business outcomes
- Hire, develop, and retain top engineering talent while fostering a culture of ownership and innovation
- Make sound trade-offs between short-term delivery and long-term architectural investments
- Establish goals, prioritize work across your team and partner teams, and focus on the inputs that drive the most impactful results
A day in the life
You will split your time between technical leadership and people development. On any given day, you might review a system design for a new scaling mechanism, meet with a principal engineer to align on architecture direction, conduct a 1:1 with a direct report on career growth, and join an operational review to assess service health. Your stakeholders include senior AWS executives, partner service teams, and customers ranging from startups to the largest enterprises in the world.
About the team
The ELB Data Plane team builds and operates the software that processes every byte of customer traffic flowing through Elastic Load Balancing

We are a group of builders who care deeply about performance, reliability, and customer trust. We operate with high ownership, move fast on what matters, and support each other in delivering results at scale.
