Job description

The Marine & Electrical Power Sales Representative is responsible for growing customer relationships and delivering sales success for Caterpillar marine and power generation solutions throughout Alaska. This position develops new business opportunities, manages key customer accounts, and provides application driven solutions for standby power, prime power, marine engines, transfer switches, switchgear, and related equipment.
Working closely with customers, contractors, engineers, and internal technical teams, the representative identifies project opportunities, develops proposals, and delivers solutions that help customers maintain reliable power and keep critical operations running. This role combines business development, technical sales, and project coordination to create value for customers across commercial, industrial, marine, utility, and critical infrastructure markets.
The appointee in this position is expected to model the following practices daily:

  • Participate in ongoing professional and technical development.

Essential Functions:
This position is responsible for developing and growing sales opportunities for Caterpillar marine and power generation products and services throughout the assigned territory. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with customers, contractors, engineers, consultants, shipyards, facility managers, government agencies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Identify, qualify, and pursue new business opportunities within marine, standby power, prime power, utility, industrial, commercial, and critical infrastructure markets.
  • Promote and sell Caterpillar generators, marine engines, emergency power systems, transfer switches, paralleling switchgear, and related products and services.
  • Conduct regular customer visits, job site inspections, vessel visits, and project reviews to identify customer requirements and recommend solutions.
  • Develop account strategies and territory plans to support market growth, increase market share, and improve customer retention.
  • Collaborate with customers to evaluate operational, technical, and application requirements and develop solutions that meet project objectives.
  • Review plans, specifications, electrical drawings, bid documents, and project requirements to identify opportunities and ensure compliance with customer expectations.
  • Prepare accurate quotations, proposals, presentations, and sales forecasts utilizing company systems and resources.
  • Coordinate with engineering, project management, service, rental, product support, and Caterpillar representatives to develop complete customer solutions.
  • Manage the sales cycle from prospecting and opportunity development through proposal, negotiation, award, delivery, and project completion.
  • Work with subcontractors, vendors, packagers, and suppliers to obtain pricing, technical information, and project support.
  • Identify project opportunities through plan rooms, market intelligence, customer relationships, and industry networking activities.
  • Provide technical product information and application guidance related to power generation systems, marine propulsion systems, controls, switchgear, and supporting equipment.
  • Maintain accurate customer, project, and opportunity information within CRM and sales management systems.
  • Develop annual sales objectives and execute strategies to achieve or exceed established goals.
  • Monitor market conditions, competitive activity, customer trends, and emerging technologies impacting marine and power generation markets.
  • Represent the company at trade shows, industry events, customer meetings, manufacturer training programs, and professional association activities.
  • Support customers throughout equipment installation, commissioning, startup, and ongoing operational requirements as needed.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of Caterpillar products, competitive products, applicable codes, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Travel throughout the assigned territory to support customers and business development activities.
  • Demonstrate alignment with company values, safety expectations, and customer-focused business practices.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

What We're Looking For
Required
  • Strong relationship-building and customer communication skills
  • Ability to travel to customer locations and job sites
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record
  • Ability to manage a territory, follow up consistently, and maintain accurate CRM information
  • Comfort learning technical products, systems, and customer applications
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with internal teams
  • Professional written and verbal communication skills

Preferred
  • Experience selling generators, power systems, industrial equipment, electrical equipment, or other technical solutions
  • Experience working with contractors, engineers, project managers, facility managers, or industrial customers
  • Familiarity with standby power, prime power, transfer switches, paralleling switchgear, or electrical/mechanical systems
  • Experience reviewing project specifications, drawings, proposals, or bid documents
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, business, construction management, or related field
  • Prior experience using CRM, quoting, project management, spreadsheet, and presentation tools
