Job description

William A. Hazel, Inc., a total site development contractor for over 60 years, is looking for a Dump Truck Driver. This position reports to and is under the direction of the dispatcher. William A. Hazel, Inc., operates all over the Northern Virginia Area, including some areas in West Virginia. This position requires a valid Class B commercial driver's license.
**Must have 3 years of trucking experience with at least 2 years of driving a dump truck.**
Key Responsibilities:

  • Qualification to drive, under both the DOT regulations and in the opinion of the company.
  • Inspect truck equipment and supplies, such as tires, lights, brakes, fuel, oil and water.
  • Start engine, shift gears, press pedals and turn steering to operate truck.
  • Drive standard transmission trucks to various job sites to load and offload materials.
  • Move levers to raise and lower bed when filled, drive truck to work site, and move levers to dump material.
  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with dispatcher to receive instructions.
  • After dumping, check spreader lip for dirt or stone and remove.
  • After loading, check spreader lip and sides for dirt or stone and remove.
  • Maintain a daily inspection log.
  • Inspect tarp for repairs.
  • Must keep track of expiration date of DOT physical card.
  • If truck breaks down:
    • Know exact location of where you are. Street and/or road name, Job name. Call in to dispatcher to let them know about truck being down.
    • Know roughly what broke (e.g. airline, engine failure, or flat tire).
  • If the job is done early, must call the dispatcher and see if you can go to another job.
Qualifications & Requirements
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
  • Ability to read a limited number of two-and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
  • Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
  • Ability to add and subtract simple numbers and to multiply and divide.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Ability to apply common senseunderstanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.
