The Duke Energy Nuclear Fleet Corporate Design Engineering (CDE) department is the Design Authority for each of Duke Energy's six nuclear sites. CDE is responsible for the execution of a fleet portfolio that includes design solutions supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence, and plant modernization.
The Robinson Nuclear Plant Corporate Design Electrical Engineering team manages the capital engineering change (EC) portfolio at the Harris/Robinson nuclear sites. The team collaborates with other CDE staff to ensure that high quality design solutions are delivered to meet site needs and milestone requirements.
Responsibilities
  • Develop the scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes, which include but are not limited to, AC power systems, DC power systems, Large AC motors, Transformers, Switchgear, Motor Control Centers, Voltage Regulators, Breakers, etc.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluates alternatives, determines and presents recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities.
  • Develop or revise design specifications or technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes.
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes.
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes.

Basic/Required Qualifications
Senior Engineer
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Engineer III
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited school will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience or 3 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in principles of project management.
  • Experience in the utility industry.
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Working level knowledge of ETAP software program.
  • Working level knowledge of nuclear industry cyber security control practices
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process.

Special Requirements
The incumbent must meet the minimum ANSI requirements for this position identified within the scope of Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011, Confirmation of Regulatory Guide 1.8 Personnel Qualifications
  • 1 year of nuclear power plant experience
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Additional hours expected as workload/business need requires.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions
  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility.
  • Selected candidate is expected to be Onsite daily during the initial qualification process, which typically takes 6-9 months. After successfully completing all training, candidates can switch to a hybrid work schedule.
  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
