What are DTNs (Delay Tolerant Networks)?

DTNs, or Delay Tolerant Networks, are specialized types of computer networks designed to operate effectively over extreme distances or in environments where continuous network connectivity cannot be guaranteed. These networks are commonly used in scenarios such as space communications, remote sensing, and disaster recovery, where traditional internet protocols may fail due to long delays or frequent disruptions. DTNs use a store-and-forward approach, temporarily storing data until a reliable path to the destination becomes available. This enables robust communication even in challenging or unpredictable network conditions.
