What is a drywall helper?

Drywall helpers are entry-level construction workers who assist experienced drywall installers with tasks related to hanging, finishing, and repairing drywall panels in buildings. Their duties typically include measuring and cutting drywall sheets, preparing surfaces, mixing joint compounds, cleaning up work areas, and handing tools and materials to drywall installers. This role is physically demanding and often serves as a stepping stone to becoming a full-fledged drywall installer. Drywall helpers work on both residential and commercial construction sites under the supervision of skilled tradespeople.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drywall helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drywall Helper, you need basic construction knowledge, physical stamina, and the ability to accurately measure and cut drywall, often acquired through on-the-job training or a high school diploma. Familiarity with hand and power tools, such as tape measures, utility knives, drills, and drywall lifts, is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and a strong work ethic are valuable soft skills for supporting lead installers and maintaining job site efficiency. These abilities ensure quality workmanship, safety, and timely project completion in a physically demanding construction environment.

What are some common challenges drywall helpers face on the job, and how can they prepare for them?

Drywall Helpers often encounter challenges such as working in tight or awkward spaces, managing heavy lifting, and maintaining a clean, safe worksite. Preparing for these challenges involves developing good physical stamina, learning proper lifting techniques, and staying organized with tools and materials. Additionally, being proactive in communicating with the lead drywall installer and the rest of the crew can help ensure tasks are completed safely and efficiently. Staying adaptable and eager to learn from more experienced team members also makes a big difference in overcoming day-to-day obstacles.

If you are the kind of estimator who lives in the details, understands union work, and has experience pricing large-scale projects, this could be a career-defining opportunity.

The Senior Estimator / Chief Estimator will be responsible for leading the estimating process and overseeing bid strategy for drywall and interior systems projects throughout the Boston market.

This is not a “broad brush” estimating role.

Our client is looking for someone who can produce detailed, disciplined estimates that win work while protecting margins.

You will be working on projects typically ranging from $5M to $30M+, with the majority of work being large commercial construction projects

The Role

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed estimates for large commercial construction projects
• Review drawings, specifications, and bid documents
• Perform accurate takeoffs and cost analysis
• Utilize On-Screen Takeoff and QuickBid to prepare estimates
• Develop pricing strategies to win competitive bids
• Coordinate with project management and leadership on bid strategy
• Mentor and support other estimators when necessary
• Maintain strong relationships with general contractors and industry partners

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are looking for a seasoned drywall estimator who knows the industry and can operate at a senior level.

Ideal candidates will have:

• 10+ years of drywall estimating experience
• Experience with union drywall construction (strongly preferred)
• Proficiency with On-Screen Takeoff (OST) and QuickBid
• Experience estimating large commercial projects ($5M – $30M+)
• Strong understanding of drywall, metal framing, and interior systems
• Ability to produce accurate, detailed estimates under tight timelines
• Strong communication and leadership skills

Candidates currently working as:

• Senior Estimator
• Chief Estimator
• Lead Estimator
• Estimating Manager

…within a drywall or interior systems subcontractor environment are encouraged to apply.

Projects typically include:

• Large commercial construction
• Healthcare facilities
• Institutional buildings
• High-rise construction
• Tenant fit-out projects
• Large-scale interior systems work

While the company occasionally performs smaller projects and tenant fit-outs, their sweet spot is large commercial work above $10M.Project Types

Boston, Massachusetts

Candidates already in the Boston area are strongly preferred.

However, relocation may be considered for the right senior-level estimator with strong drywall experience.Location

Why This Opportunity?

This is a chance to step into a leadership role with a highly respected contractor that consistently works on major projects in the Boston market.

You will have the opportunity to:

• Lead estimating on major projects
• Work with an experienced and detail-driven team
• Influence bid strategy and company growth
• Play a key role in winning large commercial work
