What is a drone developer?

A Drone Developer is a software and hardware engineer who designs, builds, and programs unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). They work with drone flight control systems, navigation algorithms, communication protocols, and sensor integration. Their role often involves writing software for autonomous flight, obstacle detection, and mission planning. Drone Developers collaborate with robotics engineers, aerospace specialists, and AI experts to improve drone capabilities for industries like agriculture, defense, logistics, and surveying.

What are some typical challenges a drone developer faces on a daily basis?

Drone Developers often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting issues with hardware-software integration, ensuring robust communication between onboard systems, and adapting to rapidly evolving regulations in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) industry. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including hardware engineers, software developers, and test pilots—is a key part of the job, requiring both technical flexibility and strong communication. Additionally, working in a fast-paced environment where project requirements can shift quickly helps developers stay adaptable while delivering innovative solutions. Overcoming these challenges provides valuable experience and can lead to exciting career growth within the drone technology sector.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drone developer, and why are they important?

A Drone Developer needs a solid background in computer science or engineering, with strong programming skills (often in C++, Python, or ROS) and expertise in robotics and embedded systems. Familiarity with hardware prototyping tools, drone flight controllers, simulation platforms, and relevant certifications like the FAA Part 107 are typically valuable. Creative problem-solving, strong teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this field. These capabilities are critical because drone technology requires integrating complex software and hardware within regulatory and safety constraints.

How do you become a drone developer?

To become a drone developer, you typically need a background in computer science, robotics, or electrical engineering, along with programming skills in languages such as C++, Python, or Java. Experience with drone hardware, embedded systems, and software development tools like ROS or SDKs is also important, and obtaining relevant certifications can enhance job prospects.

Is drone developer a good career?

A drone developer designs and builds software and hardware for unmanned aerial vehicles, a growing field with applications in surveillance, delivery, and photography. The role often requires skills in programming, electronics, and robotics, and can offer opportunities in technology, manufacturing, and research sectors. Job prospects are strong as drone technology continues to expand across various industries.

Job description

Position Summary
Teal's electrical engineers are responsible for their designs from conception to sustaining. As a Senior Electrical Engineer you are responsible for multiple subsystems under the guidance of a project lead engineer, or you may be responsible for one type of subsystem used in multiple concurrent projects. You are a subject-matter expert in at least three technologies critical to UAVs.
You are proficient in all aspects of the design process and can work effectively with counterparts in other disciplines such as mechanical engineering and firmware development to maximize the chances of first-pass success. You have a deep sense of ownership in your work.
You are experienced with design-for-test (DFT), design-for-manufacturing (DFM), and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and can be relied upon to incorporate these concepts into your designs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Serve as primary engineer responsible for multiple subsystems within a design or a single subsystem incorporated into multiple, possibly concurrently running, projects
  • Design subsystems that are incorporated into larger designs
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert in at least three technologies critical to UAVs
  • Design high complexity PCBAs that incorporate design-for-test (DFT), design-for-manufacturing (DFM), and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) best practices to maximize the probability of first-pass success
  • Drive EMI/EMC compliance testing
  • Conduct trade studies to evaluate new technologies that may be incorporated into Teal's designs
  • Write Engineering Verification Test (EVT) procedures
  • Execute Engineering Verification Test (EVT) procedures and write reports documenting EVT test results
  • Troubleshoot issues uncovered in EVT, DVT, and reported by customers in the field
  • Estimate the level of effort in engineering hours and total duration of tasks assigned to you to help refine your lead engineer's and project manager's schedule
  • Lead design reviews of your work and participate in design reviews for others
  • Perform PCB layout as needed and work with both internal and external layout resources
  • Work with manufacturing test engineers to develop production line tests by leveraging the engineering validation test procedures and results
  • Guide sustaining engineering on existing designs to manage cost and component obsolescence as needed
  • Maintain an accurate electrical bill of materials (BOM) in the product lifecycle management (PLM) system

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • 9+ years' experienceowning designs from concept through production, leading multi-subsystem development and ensuring first-pass success through cross-functional collaboration with mechanical and firmware teams.
  • Solid understanding of PCB manufacturing technology
  • Proficiency in defining a PCB stackup that minimizes cost while still achieving excellent EMI/EMC performance
  • Proficiency with high-density interconnect (HDI) PCB technologies
  • Solid understanding of PCBA manufacturing technology
  • Solid understanding of how to use different type of electrical components depending on a design's operating requirements
  • Good working knowledge of at least 3 key drone technologies (e.g., Brushless DC Motor Drive, Inertial sensors, GPS, Lithium-Ion batteries, Camera Interfaces, Radio modules)
  • Proficiency in use of laboratory test equipment
  • Excellent communication skills in writing reports and corresponding with manufacturers
  • Proficiency in Altium Designer
  • Proficiency with a SPICE-based circuit simulator or a signal/power integrity design tool (SI/PI)
  • Solid understanding electrical signal propagation
  • Experience using a programming language to automate testing, interface with test equipment, and process and visualize test results (Python is preferred)

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Must be able to walk, stand, and navigate large indoor and outdoor facilities for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs on a regular basis.
  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in designated areas or when performing specific tasks, in accordance with safety protocols and company policy.
  • May be required to climb ladders, stoop, kneel, or crouch during inspections, maintenance walk-throughs, or emergency response situations.
  • Regular exposure to facility operations including noise, dust, temperature fluctuations, and industrial equipment.
  • Occasional off-hours or weekend work required for emergency facility responses or projects as needed
