What is a driving instructor?

Driving instructors are professionals who teach individuals how to safely operate vehicles and prepare them for driving tests. They provide instruction on traffic laws, road safety, and practical driving skills. Driving instructors may work with new drivers, individuals seeking to improve their driving, or those needing specialized training. They assess student progress and tailor lessons to individual needs. Becoming a driving instructor typically requires certification and a valid driver's license.

What do driving instructors do?

Driving instructors teach students how to drive safely and follow traffic laws. As a driving instructor, your job duties include creating lesson plans for classroom instruction, giving students hands-on driving practice, and providing feedback to students on how they can improve. You need strong teaching and communication skills to help your students learn essential driving concepts and methods. Driving instructors usually find jobs teaching first-time drivers who are preparing for their driver’s license test or experienced drivers who want to drive different vehicles, such as motorcycles or commercial vehicles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driving instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driving Instructor, you need a thorough understanding of traffic laws, vehicle operation, and teaching techniques, typically supported by a valid instructor's license and a clean driving record. Familiarity with driving simulation tools, dual-control vehicle systems, and learner assessment platforms is also important. Patience, clear communication, and strong interpersonal skills help build student confidence and address learner anxieties. These skills are essential for ensuring students' safety, promoting effective learning, and fostering responsible driving habits.

What are some common challenges faced by driving instructors, and how can they be managed?

Driving instructors often encounter students with varying confidence levels and learning speeds, which can make lesson planning and progress tracking a challenge. Additionally, instructors must remain patient and alert while ensuring safety in unpredictable traffic situations. Effective communication, ongoing professional development, and building rapport with students can help manage these challenges. Collaborating with other instructors for support and best practices also contributes to a positive and successful teaching environment.

Both roles require specific qualifications and are integral to driver training and licensing processes, but they differ in responsibilities and work environments.

How quickly can you become a driving instructor?

Becoming a driving instructor typically requires completing a training course that lasts several weeks to a few months, depending on the program and licensing requirements. Candidates must also obtain a valid driving license, pass written and practical exams, and meet age and experience criteria before starting to instruct learners.

Is there a high demand for driving instructors?

The demand for driving instructors is generally steady and can vary by region and economic conditions. Factors such as new driver licensing requirements, population growth, and the availability of driving schools influence job opportunities for driving instructors. Certification and experience can also impact employability in this field.

At 160 Driving Academy, one of the largest CDL training organizations in the country, we are hiring CDL Class A Theory Instructors to guide students through the knowledge and permit requirements that launch their driving careers.

This is an in-person position based at our Tulsa, OK location. You will report to the classroom on-site and lead students through a virtual classroom. With 90 locations across 32 states, 160 Driving Academy offers the kind of stability and growth that is hard to find out on the road.

What You Will Do

  • Teach CDL knowledge at our Tulsa, OK location through virtual classroom instruction focused on permit preparation and driving theory.
  • Break down CDL topics step by step, including safety regulations and FMCSA-based requirements.
  • Prepare students to meet CDL permit testing standards with confidence.
  • Model safety and professionalism in every session.
  • Track student attendance and participation, stepping in with support when students need it.
  • Keep accurate documentation, including attendance and progress records.
  • Communicate clearly to help every student master the material.

Your Schedule

This full-time, on-site role comes with a schedule many drivers find refreshing after life on the road: a four-day core week and a lighter midweek, with potential for a mid-week day off.

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday are your full instructional days, for 10 hours each.
  • Wednesdays are light, and some Wednesdays are off entirely, giving you a true midweek break.
  • You will reach 40+ hours per week while keeping a weekday and weekend to recharge.
  • Core hours run from 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM Central, so you are home every evening.
  • We are looking for someone flexible with their hours and open to occasional overtime, which is typically light.

What We Offer

  • A predictable routine that has you home every evening.
  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience.
  • A comprehensive benefits package: health, dental, vision, PTO, and paid holidays.
  • Full training and onboarding to help you step confidently into virtual instruction.
  • Real opportunities for career growth within our nationwide network of schools.
  • The chance to make a lasting impact by helping students launch their CDL careers.

Requirements

  • A valid CDL Class A license with at least 24 months of verified tractor-trailer driving experience
  • Residency in the state you are applying for and willingness to travel to our Tulsa, OK location.
  • A safe driving record and the ability to pass a DOT physical and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to manage a virtual classroom.
  • Organization and the ability to keep multiple students on track in an online environment.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching, mentoring, or training drivers.
  • Driver Training Instructor certification. If your state requires it, we will help you get certified.
  • Experience with virtual instruction or online learning platforms.
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA regulations and CDL permit requirements.
  • Comfort with computer tools such as Salesforce, Zoom, Canvas, and Microsoft Outlook.

At 160 Driving Academy, we help experienced drivers become the instructors who shape the next generation of CDL professionals.
