POSITION SUMMARY

Driver Training Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing training programs to ensure that drivers are well-trained, compliant with federal and state regulations, and equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary for safe and efficient vehicle operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Ensures the Safety Department is viewed as a resource by our professional drivers and maintains an approachable demeanor.

Conduct an engaging and comprehensive orientation program for new drivers, ensuring they understand company policies, procedures, and expectations.

Serve as the main point of contact for new drivers during their onboarding process, addressing questions or concerns promptly.

Collaborate with other departments, such as safety, operations, maintenance and HR, to ensure a seamless onboarding experience.

Build and maintain strong relationships with drivers, acting as a resource for their needs and concerns.

Analyze Lytx DriveCam event data to identify safety-critical behaviors, including distracted driving, hard braking, and unsafe following distances.

Conduct one-on-one coaching sessions with drivers to review DriveCam footage, accident records and other safety related incidents.

Collaborate with drivers to develop strategies to mitigate unsafe behaviors and improve decision-making on the road.

Provide recognition for safe driving practices identified through DriveCam events to reinforce positive behaviors.

Address performance concerns through structured action plans, providing clear goals and timelines for improvement.

Ensure all coaching sessions and performance discussions are documented accurately and consistently.

Assist in developing tailored safety training programs based on observed trends from DriveCam events and other performance data.

Facilitate ongoing safety education, including defensive driving techniques, regulatory updates, and fatigue management.

Lead regional safety meetings and workshops to engage drivers in J&R Schugel's safety initiatives.

Ensure compliance with FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA regulations, as well as internal safety policies.

Utilize DriveCam and other tools to generate insights on safety trends, driver behavior, and risk factors.

Develop proactive measures to address recurring safety challenges across the fleet.

Collaborate with other safety managers and departments to ensure consistency in safety protocols and coaching methods.

Recommends discipline up to and including termination of drivers to Safety and Compliance Manager for safety related issues.

Review and audit driver qualification files to ensure compliance with DOT regulations for their orientation class.

Performs other duties as assigned or directed by Supervisor.

Requirements

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as safety management is preferred, not required.

Experience

2 or more years of transportation experience in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

Strong knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and CSA regulations and standards.

Strong knowledge of Driver Qualification Files and DQF Compliance Requirements.


Computer Skills

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Intermediate knowledge of various online platforms, i.e. Lytx DriveCam, Luma (LMS) and Tenstreet.
  • AS400 TMS experience preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm.
  • Data entry skills.
  • Able to read, write, and speak the English language fluently.
  • Familiar with or willing to become familiar with DOT regulations and rules as it pertains to the qualifications of driving a truck for the company.
