What is a driver nanny?

Driver Nannies are childcare professionals who not only care for children but also provide safe and reliable transportation. They are responsible for driving children to and from school, extracurricular activities, and appointments, while also supervising and ensuring their well-being. In addition to driving duties, Driver Nannies may also help with homework, prepare meals, and perform light household tasks related to the children. They must have a clean driving record, relevant childcare experience, and often hold CPR or first aid certifications. Families hire Driver Nannies to ensure their children are transported safely and are well cared for during busy schedules.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a driver nanny?

To thrive as a Driver Nanny, you need a valid driver's license, a clean driving record, child care experience, and often CPR/First Aid certification. Familiarity with child safety seats, GPS navigation systems, and basic vehicle maintenance is typically required. Exceptional reliability, patience, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate well with both children and parents make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure the safe and effective transportation and care of children, providing peace of mind for families and supporting children's well-being.

What are common challenges faced by a driver nanny, and how can they be managed?

Driver Nannies often face the challenge of balancing safe and punctual transportation with attentive childcare. Managing varying schedules, traffic conditions, and children's moods requires excellent time management and flexibility. Clear communication with parents and establishing routines can help mitigate stress and ensure all responsibilities are met efficiently. Additionally, staying updated on safe driving practices and child care protocols is essential for success in this role.

What is the difference between Driver Nanny vs Babysitter?

Work EnvironmentPrivate homes, transporting children, supervising activitiesChild's home, supervising play and basic care
Employer & IndustryFamilies needing transportation and childcareFamilies, occasional or part-time care

While both Driver Nannies and Babysitters provide childcare, Driver Nannies also handle transportation and require driving credentials. Babysitters typically focus on supervision and basic care without driving responsibilities. The Driver Nanny role combines childcare with driving duties, making it suitable for families needing both services.

A warm, active family in Sherborn is seeking a dependable, energetic part-time afterschool nanny for their two children, ages 6 and 11. The nanny will arrive ahead of the children to handle a few household tasks, then be a steady, welcoming presence as the kids transition home from school. Afternoons include homework help, reading and math practice (especially with the younger child), library trips, outdoor play, and driving to local activities. Occasional added flexibility (around 30 minutes) is appreciated, and advance notice will always be given.

Benefits: one week paid vacation, 2 sick days, 2 personal days, 3 paid holidays, gas stipend for work-related driving

Responsibilities:

  • Arrive ahead of the children to complete light household duties, including laundry, dishes, tidying, and meal prep
  • Meet the children off the bus and provide a warm, steady presence during the afterschool transition
  • Support homework and reinforce reading and math, particularly with the younger child
  • Plan engaging afternoons โ€” library visits, outdoor play, and structured downtime
  • Drive the children to local afterschool activities
  • Handle light meal prep (simple chopping, putting a prepared item in the oven)
  • Manage the children's laundry and light organizing
  • Encourage the children to pick up after themselves
  • Run occasional local errands during downtime (e.g., a quick grocery pickup)

Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license required; own reliable vehicle preferred (gas stipend provided); parking available
  • Comfortable swimming with children
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification (or willing to complete before the start date)
