Driver Manager Job Description

Position Reports to: Driver Manager Supervisor

Position Summary: Under general supervision, manages the utilization and success of drivers; processes messages, sends load and customer information to drivers; ensures drivers understand their assigned tasks so they can complete the task on time, and properly; advocates for drivers when necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensures ETA’s, PTA’s and RDO’s are always updated, and accurate, according to the driver’s needs.
  • Reviews all pre-plan(s) for each driver to ensure they have the required HOS available, can meet any appointed times on the load(s), and the pre-plan(s) won’t jeopardize the driver’s home-time needs.
  • Notifies the Load Planners if a pre-plan won’t work, or will no longer work, for a driver as soon as they recognize a conflict with the assigned plan(s). Requests loads from Load Planners in addition to the current pre-plan(s), when applicable.
  • Dispatches drivers; processes inbound messages and answers questions via the In-Cab messaging system. Sends pre-plan info, load plans, customer information, route suggestions, local directions, and fuel solutions in a timely manner so drivers are well informed and can trip plan properly.
  • Notifies Load Planners and Customer Service if a driver is within 2 hours of their PTA and is still in need of a pre-plan.
  • Coaches drivers to improve and become more successful through various means and tools.
  • Trains with other related departments as necessary according to company needs; participates in companywide training opportunities to improve self-knowledge and works to maintain mutual respect and professionalism with co-workers and management to sustain a positive team environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Ability and desire to contribute equally to a team environment; ability to communicate clearly, effectively, and efficiently by phone; creative problem solving.

Experience: 1+ years in a transportation operation and must demonstrate the ability to successfully meet all promotion criteria for this position.

Physical Qualifications: Ability to lift 20 lbs., use a telephone, and computer are required.
