What is the difference between Drilling Rig vs Drilling Operator?
| Aspect | Drilling Rig | Drilling Operator |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Certifications in equipment operation, safety training | Same certifications, plus operational training |
| Work Environment | On-site at drilling locations, heavy machinery | On-site, operating drilling equipment |
| Industry Usage | Used to describe the equipment and infrastructure | Refers to the personnel operating the equipment |
The drilling rig is the large structure used to drill wells, while the drilling operator is the worker who operates the rig. Both roles require similar certifications and work in the same environment, but the rig refers to the equipment, and the operator refers to the personnel managing it.
What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on a drilling rig, and how can they be managed?
What Are Drilling Rig Jobs?
Six positions on an oil rig crew run the operations of both onshore and offshore drilling rigs. As the rig manager, you are in charge of the company's interests. You oversee all personnel and operations and report program progress to your superiors. As a driller, you monitor drilling procedures and ensure that all other personnel follows safety and efficiency protocol. As a derrickhand, you maintain and repair the circulating system equipment. Your duties as a leasehand include setting up and taking down the drilling equipment and keeping an organized work environment. The floorhand's responsibilities include manipulating pipe sections and drill stems. Finally, as the motorhand, you operate the diesel and electric engines that keep the rig running.

Job description
Quaise Energy is unlocking the Earth's deep heat to deliver clean, reliable, baseload energy at scale-almost anywhere in the world. As both a technology innovator and project developer, Quaise builds and operates solutions that harness superhot geothermal energy far below the surface, enabling power generation that can rival the output of today's most efficient fossil fuel and nuclear plants. With its millimeter wave drilling technology, Quaise's mission is to make superhot geothermal a backbone of the modern energy system, offering affordable, zero-carbon power and true energy independence for communities and nations everywhere. Â
The Field Engineer I role supports the buildout of Quaise Energy's operations team as we advance geothermal energy development. This position will focus on assisting engineering teams with field-based testing and prototype drilling operations to depths of ~1,000m using millimeter wave drilling (MMWD) systems. Â
The field operations team is responsible for operating the MMWD system at sites across the U.S. and potentially internationally. This includes working with gyrotrons, high-voltage power supplies, chillers, compressors, water pumps, sensors, vacuum systems, and conventional drilling rig equipment. The Field Engineer I will apply prior field experience to ensure safe and efficient operations while contributing to rig-up, rig-over, and drilling activities.Â
Essential functions (Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.)Â
- Work on a 15-5 rotation schedule, with 12-hour day/night shifts.Â
- Ensure safe and efficient field operations; lead risk assessments prior to each activity.Â
- Assemble, test, and operate equipment for field trials.Â
- Maintain field operations records, daily logs, and inspection reports.Â
- Troubleshoot technical issues, conduct root cause analyses, and propose solutions.Â
- Provide technical feedback to the engineering team to optimize performance and safety of MMWD systems.Â
- Verify third-party equipment compliance with operational requirements.Â
- Plan, design, and execute System Integration Tests (SITs) with internal teams and external vendors.Â
- Document lessons learned and prepare end-of-well reports.Â
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver efficient field trials.Â
- Perform other duties as assigned. Â
Competencies Â
- Proficiency in drilling operations and troubleshooting downhole conditions.Â
- Strong practical and hands-on skills; ability to use basic hand tools.Â
- Experience collaborating with product development/engineering teams.Â
- Leadership potential and ability to work in a team of three on MMWD operations.Â
- Skilled at troubleshooting large, complex systems.Â
- Understanding of safety guidelines.Â
- Familiarity with writing procedures, root cause analysis, and HSE protocols.Â
- Experience interacting with third-party vendors and contractors.Â
- IADC RigPass Certification (or equivalent) preferred.Â
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skillsÂ
- Familiarity with a startup or high growth environment. Â
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.Â
- Proficient with Microsoft Project or other project planning software.Â
Supervisory responsibilities Â
- NoneÂ
Education and Experience Â
- Bachelors degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Petroleum Engineering (or equivalent).Â
- 2-4 years of Oil and Gas Field Experience (drilling experience preferred).Â
