Job description

Rig Hand

Summary

Part of the crew responsible for the maintenance and day to day operation of the rig.

Responsibilities Include but not limited to:

  • โ€ข Competent with rig and all equipment
    โ€ข Performs general maintenance of draw works
    โ€ข Loads and off-loads pipe and assists in rig movement
    โ€ข Checks snub lines, pull lines, shackles, and cable clamps to verify condition
    โ€ข Checks dies in slips and tongs and all safety and riding belts to verify condition
    โ€ข Responds to emergency situations including major mechanical or structural failures
    โ€ข Trips pipe โ€“ uses slips, tongs and elevators
    โ€ข Knowledge of types of pipe
    โ€ข Latch and unlatch tubing and rods
    โ€ข Wrench rods
    โ€ข Knowledge of how drilling and/or pumping units run
    โ€ข Prepare and set up rig for workover
    โ€ข Knowledge of thread types, tubing sizes and rod sizes
    โ€ข Knowledge of working derricks and drill floor
    โ€ข Diagnose well problems
    โ€ข Cut and thread pipe
    โ€ข Perform service maintenance on rigs

Knowledge and skill requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Knowledge of types of drill pipe and drill collars.
  • Knowledge of thread types and tubing sizes.
  • Knowledge of working derricks and drill floor.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Requires willingness to work a flexible schedule.
  • Good driving record with CDL preferred.
