What is a drill rig?

A drill rig is a machine used to create holes in the ground, typically for the purposes of extracting natural resources such as oil, gas, or minerals, or for construction and engineering projects. Drill rigs come in various sizes and types, ranging from small, portable rigs to large, complex structures used for deep drilling operations. They can be operated on land or offshore and are an essential part of the drilling industry. The main components of a drill rig include the derrick or mast, drill string, power systems, and circulation systems. Proper operation and maintenance of drill rigs are critical for safety and efficiency on drilling sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drill rig operator?

To thrive as a Drill Rig Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, understanding of drilling techniques, and often a high school diploma or equivalent, with additional vocational training preferred. Familiarity with drilling machinery, safety protocols, and sometimes certifications such as OSHA or MSHA are typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well under pressure are valuable soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure safe, efficient drilling operations and help prevent costly errors or accidents on site.

What are the typical challenges faced by a drill rig operator and how can they be managed effectively?

Drill rig operators often encounter challenges such as working in extreme weather conditions, managing equipment malfunctions, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. Effective communication with team members and regular preventive maintenance are crucial to minimize downtime and operational hazards. Operators also need to stay updated on the latest industry practices and safety standards to ensure efficient and safe drilling operations.

What is the difference between Drill Rig vs Drilling Operator?

Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, oil & gas fields, mining locationsOn-site with drill rig, often in remote locations
Industry UsageUsed across oil & gas, mining, constructionCommonly employed in oil & gas, mineral exploration

The Drill Rig is the equipment used to perform drilling tasks, while the Drilling Operator is the skilled worker who operates and manages the drill rig during operations. Both roles are essential in drilling projects, with the rig serving as the tool and the operator as the skilled technician ensuring safe and efficient drilling.

How to get a job on a drill rig?

To get a job on a drill rig, candidates typically need relevant experience in construction, mining, or oil and gas industries, along with safety certifications such as OSHA or MSHA. Physical fitness, the ability to work in challenging environments, and familiarity with drilling equipment are also important. Applying through staffing agencies, job boards, or directly to companies operating drill rigs can help secure employment.

Job description

Description
Would you like to have a career with a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic mining company? We have an exciting opportunity for you!
As a Field-Based Health & Safety Specialist embedded with NGM MRM Drill Services, you'll play a hands-on role supporting both surface and underground drilling operations. You'll be a visible field presence-working directly with contractors to verify safe work practices, ensure compliance with Barrick's Contractor Management and Global Drilling Standards, and coach teams on managing high-risk activities.
In this role, you'll conduct drill rig inspections, Critical Control Verifications, and field audits, while leading hazard identification, incident response, and iCAM investigations to drive learning and prevent recurrence. You'll partner closely with operations, maintenance, and H&S teams to strengthen contractor performance, close corrective actions, and promote a strong safety culture. If you thrive in the field, value collaboration, and are passionate about keeping people safe, this is an opportunity to make a real impact every day.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain daily field presence to support drilling operations (surface and underground), verifying safe work execution and compliance with Barrick Contractor Management and Global Drilling Standards.
  • Inspect drill rigs and work areas (scheduled and unannounced), verify pre-starts, site set-up, and ensure deficiencies are corrected before work continues.
  • Perform Critical Control Verifications, task observations, and field coaching focused on high-risk drilling activities and effective control use.
  • Lead and support contractor onboarding, mobilization readiness, training documentation audits, and verification of required authorizations and competencies.
  • Participate in and facilitate field risk assessments (FRA/FLRA/JHA) to ensure hazards and controls reflect current conditions.
  • Respond to hazards, near misses, and incidents; stop unsafe work, complete reporting in Isometrix, and lead or participate in incident and iCAM investigations.
  • Track corrective actions, verify closure and effectiveness, and provide leadership with contractor performance feedback, trends, and priority risks.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, H&S, and IH teams to resolve field issues, promote industrial hygiene controls, and share learnings.
  • Maintain professional competency through ongoing training in MSHA/OSHA requirements, Barrick standards, drilling best practices, and site requirements.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalent
  • Minimum 5 years of drilling and mining experience (surface and underground)
  • Solid understanding of MSHA health and safety regulations and Nevada Gold Mines HS&E requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting drilling operations (surface and/or underground) and contractor management oversight.
  • Skilled in performing drill rig inspections, Critical Control Verifications (CCVs), task observations, and compliance audits; adept in implementing corrective and preventative actions.
  • Experienced in Isometrix incident reporting and leading/participating in accident and incident investigations, including iCAM.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and effective at communicating field findings to contractors and internal stakeholders.

What We Can Offer You
  • A comprehensive compensation package including bonuses benefits, and stock purchase plans where applicable
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team
  • An Opportunity to transform Traditional Mining into the future of Digital Mining
  • Opportunities to grow and learn with the industry colleagues are endless
  • Access to a variety of career opportunities across Nevada Gold Mine locations
  • Nevada Gold Mines is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an equal opportunity employer

Thank you for your application, however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
