Job description

MAINTENANCE PERSON- 7am-3:30pm
The district is seeking an experienced individual to join our Maintenance Department. 

PURPOSE:
The  Maintenance worker maintains school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of the district facilities. To accomplish these tasks the Maintenance worker must work closely with the staff and administration of the Garfield School District.
REPORTS TO:            Director and Assistant of Facilities
WORKING HOURS: 7am-3:30pm 
QUALIFICATIONS:
        High School Diploma or GED (all current individuals are grandfathered)
        Boiler Fireman's Black Seal License
        Proficiency with operating electrical tools/equipment
        Experience in building and grounds operations
Strong organizational skills
Ability to use computers and software, but not limited to maintenance and inventory, HR portal, professional development and scanning in and out daily.
Ability to read and write in English.
Ability to read chemical labels
Ability to read and follow material safety data sheets
Ability to initiate and complete work orders
Ability to function as part of a buildings and grounds operational team by assuming varied responsibilities in differing circumstances
Have a valid NJ Driver's License, be able to drive and qualify under the district's insurance carrier when driving a district vehicle.
Must be able to lift a minimum of 75 pounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Maintain school buildings and grounds in top condition to ensure full and productive use of district facilities. This includes doors, windows, minor roof repairs, heating and ventilation units, refrigeration units including drinking fountains. All boiler room components such as circulating water pumps and air compressors.
  2. Performs minor repairs and adjustments to electrical system
  3. Repairs or replaces light fixtures, including ballasts and sockets, light switches, and duplex outlets
  4. Run new electrical services from existing power sources for modification of, or addition to existing school rooms, using conduit, BX cable or wire modeling as required.
  5. Fabricates and installs various metal parts, using various methods of assembling, such as conventional drilling and bolting and soldering.
  6. Repairs or replaces mechanical components as, panic bolts, door locks, door closures, ventilators, radiators, motor vents, draw curtain hardware, desk drawers and locks, file cabinet drawers and locks.
  7. Assists in minor repairs to motor vehicle equipment and maintenance and grounds equipment.
  8. Performs various carpentry tasks such as repairing wood floors, bleachers, furniture, benches, etc.
  9. Performs repairs and replacements of pipe fittings and plumbing faucets of our buildings and building equipment. This shall include the utility services, gas, oil, water and the secondary services of steam and water for heating, and compressed air, etc.
  10. Repairs and replacements of lavatory and shower room accessories
  11. Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, caulking, cutting out plastic cracks, patching, and masking. Performs brush, roller and spray painting.
  12. Reglazes/caulking and reseals outside joints around windows and door frames within reason.
  13. Perform minor repairs to public address systems and intercom systems.
  14. Fabricates and installs forms and pours concrete for patching or new construction installations.
  15. Performs various constructions efforts in keeping with the availability of materials and equipment.
  16. Assists in snow removal, must know how to operate a plow.
  17. Must maintain balance on a ladder.
  18. Ensure that all activities conform to district guidelines and policies.
  19. Communicate effectively withal members of the school district and community.
  20. React to change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.
  21. Appropriately operate all equipment and machinery necessary.
  22. Complete required trainings yearly
  23. Other responsibilities and duties which are appropriate and necessary to the position as directed by the Director and Assistant Director of Facilities.
 
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  Twelve-month position with compensation in   accordance with the Local 560 negotiated contract.
EVALUATION:           New employees will be placed on a probationary period with three evaluations on the 30th-60th-90th day of work.  Veteran staff will be evaluated once a year.
