What is a drainage manager?

Drainage Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, maintenance, and improvement of drainage systems. Their work ensures that water is effectively managed to prevent flooding, erosion, and waterlogging in residential, commercial, or agricultural areas. They coordinate teams, manage budgets, ensure compliance with environmental regulations, and liaise with stakeholders such as local authorities and landowners. Drainage Managers play a crucial role in protecting property, infrastructure, and the environment from water-related damage.

What are the most common challenges a drainage manager faces when coordinating projects across multiple sites?

Drainage Managers often encounter challenges such as ensuring consistent communication between teams at different sites, managing tight project timelines, and adapting to unexpected weather or site-specific conditions. They must also balance regulatory compliance with cost and resource constraints. Strong organizational skills and proactive problem-solving are essential for addressing these obstacles and keeping projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drainage manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drainage Manager, you need expertise in civil engineering, hydrology, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with drainage design software (such as AutoCAD Civil 3D), GIS systems, and knowledge of regulatory compliance are typically required. Strong leadership, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help manage teams and coordinate with stakeholders. These competencies are crucial to ensure efficient, compliant, and sustainable drainage solutions for infrastructure projects.

Work Setting: Full-Time | Integrated Multi-Disciplinary Studio
Salary: $70,000 – $100,000 + Profit Sharing & 401(k) Matching

Position Overview

This is an opportunity for a civil engineering designer who wants to move beyond isolated drafting tasks and into true project influence. As a Master Planning Design Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping residential land development projects throughout Southern California—leading drainage design efforts, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and driving projects from early planning through agency approval.

This role is built for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment but wants real ownership of their work. You'll work closely with senior engineering leadership while developing the technical depth and project coordination skills needed to advance into higher-level design and management responsibilities. From storm drain infrastructure to water quality compliance, your work will directly impact how communities are planned and built.

Core Responsibilities

  • Coordinate closely with the Drainage Manager and engineering leadership to manage project schedules, budgets, and technical deliverables
  • Lead the preparation of preliminary and final drainage studies, plans, and technical reports for residential land development projects
  • Develop storm drain improvement plans and supporting hydraulic calculations in compliance with agency requirements
  • Prepare complete drainage reports, including PWQMP and FWQMP documentation
  • Evaluate and recommend Water Quality BMPs, including sizing, placement, and regulatory compliance strategies
  • Coordinate drainage infrastructure with grading, street, sewer, and water improvement plans
  • Review project conditions of approval and incorporate requirements into final design documentation
  • Respond to agency review comments and coordinate revisions to support successful approvals
  • Participate in client meetings, agency coordination meetings, and internal project discussions
  • Maintain compliance with applicable design standards, policies, and civil engineering codes
  • Support internal communication and coordination efforts across multidisciplinary project teams

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in residential land development or drainage design
  • Technical Expertise: Strong knowledge of drainage design principles, hydraulic calculations, and stormwater infrastructure
  • Software: Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD; Civil 3D experience strongly preferred
  • Water Quality Compliance: Working knowledge of WQMP requirements, BMP design, and public agency stormwater regulations
  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with internal teams, public agencies, and project stakeholders
  • Organization: Strong project coordination and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required
  • Leadership experience overseeing project drainage design or coordinating junior staff
  • Familiarity with Southern California public agency review and approval processes
  • Experience preparing agency response letters and supporting entitlement approvals
