The Drafting Technician plays a vital role within the Virtual Design Coordination (VDC) department, supporting the design and planning of HVAC and plumbing systems for commercial construction projects. This position involves creating and reviewing technical drawings, managing submittals, and assisting project managers to ensure that all documentation, designs, and schedules are aligned with project goals. The Drafting Technician is responsible for working closely with various stakeholders, including internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors, to ensure that all project details are accurately captured and communicated. A strong background in mechanical trade knowledge, software tools like Revit, AutoCAD and Navisworks, as well as attention to detail, are essential for this role. The core areas of responsibility are listed below, however other duties and responsibilities may be required to meet business needs and objectives

Requirements

Core Areas:

Drafting & Design Support:

Create, update, and maintain accurate technical drawings for HVAC and plumbing systems using Revit, AutoCAD and other relevant Autodesk design tools.

Ensure that all designs meet company standards and project specifications.

Coordinate with engineers, project managers, and other team members to develop detailed, constructible designs and shop drawings.


Submittals & Documentation:

Prepare, review, and manage submittals, ensuring that all documentation is accurate, organized, and submitted within required timelines.

Measure and verify all submittals for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.

Assist in the composition of RFIs (Requests for Information), ensuring clear communication and addressing any design discrepancies.


Project Manager Support & Coordination:

Provide drafting and design support to project managers by preparing drawings, schedules, and forecasts.

Help project managers by ensuring that all documents, including submittals, RFIs, and coordination drawings, are available and up-to-date.

Participate in meetings (both internal and external) to provide technical input and clarify design elements.


Scheduling & Forecasting:

Assist in the creation and updating of project schedules, ensuring that timelines are accurate, and forecasts reflect actual project progress.

Collaborate with project teams to forecast material needs, resources, and other design elements.


Software & Tools:

Use Viewpoint Teams to manage and track project documents, submittals, and RFIs.

Utilize Revit and AutoCAD for fabrication drawings, Revit for 3D design models, and Navisworks for model coordination.

Apply Bluebeam to mark up and review drawings and manage the document review process.


Organization & Planning:

Ensure that all project documentation, designs, and files are organized and accessible, both digitally and physically.

Assist with document management and version control to prevent errors and confusion during the project lifecycle.

Help maintain a well-organized workflow and planning process for all design and drafting tasks.


Culture & Teamwork:

Foster effective communication with internal teams, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure smooth collaboration and the successful execution of projects.

Actively participate in internal and external meetings, contributing technical expertise and insights to enhance project outcomes.

Promote a positive and collaborative work environment by supporting colleagues and maintaining a focus on safety, efficiency, and quality.


Key Performance Indicators:

Accuracy and completeness of submittals and RFIs, ensuring all project requirements are met.

Timely completion of drafting tasks, including designs and documentation, in line with project schedules.

Quality and accuracy of all technical drawings and coordination efforts.

Effective support to project managers and other stakeholders, ensuring alignment with project goals.

Positive feedback from project teams and external stakeholders regarding communication, organization, and technical support.


Required Skills and Abilities:

Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD and Navisworks for drafting and design work.

Knowledge of Bluebeam and ProjectSight for document management and collaboration.

Strong understanding of trade concepts, especially for HVAC and plumbing systems.

Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Ability to read and interpret construction documents, drawings, and specifications.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present technical information clearly to a variety of stakeholders.


Minimum Qualifications:

Associate's degree or certification in Drafting, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience.

Proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD and other Autodesk design, drafting and coordination software.

Familiarity with ProjectSight, Bluebeam, and Autodesk Forma and Procore preferred.

Basic knowledge of HVAC and plumbing systems, as well as related building codes and standards.
