What does a drafter do?

A drafter uses computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software to create plans for manufacturing, construction, or engineering projects. Your duties in this career involve working to create computer-aided drawings that include all necessary details and technical specifications. You may use specifications from an architect if you are drafting for buildings, an industrial designer if you are creating plans for products, or an engineer if you are making plans for engineering projects or structures. Your responsibilities also include making changes or correcting existing drawings under the direction of the architect or engineer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drafter, you need strong spatial visualization, technical drawing abilities, and a background in engineering or architectural principles, often backed by an associate's degree or drafting certification. Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD, Revit, or SolidWorks is typically required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help drafters collaborate with engineers and architects and ensure design accuracy. These skills are crucial for producing precise technical drawings that guide construction and manufacturing projects successfully.

How does a drafter typically collaborate with engineers and architects during a project's lifecycle?

Drafters work closely with engineers and architects by translating their concepts and sketches into detailed technical drawings and plans. Throughout a project's lifecycle, drafters often participate in meetings to clarify design intent, update drawings based on feedback, and ensure all specifications are accurately represented. Effective communication and attention to detail are essential, as drafters must coordinate revisions and address any design or structural issues that arise. This collaborative workflow helps ensure that the final construction documents align with both regulatory standards and client expectations.

What is the difference between Drafter vs CAD Technician?

AspectDrafterCAD Technician
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; technical trainingHigh school diploma; technical training or certification in CAD software
Work EnvironmentArchitectural, engineering, manufacturing settingsDesign firms, engineering companies, manufacturing industries
Job FocusCreating technical drawings based on specificationsDeveloping, editing, and managing CAD models and drawings
Tools UsedManual drafting tools, CAD softwarePrimarily CAD software like AutoCAD, Revit

Both Drafters and CAD Technicians create technical drawings, but Drafters focus more on manual and traditional drafting methods, while CAD Technicians specialize in digital CAD modeling and editing. The roles often overlap, but CAD Technicians tend to have more advanced skills in CAD software, making them more involved in digital design processes.

What is a drafter?

Drafters are professionals who use computer-aided design (CAD) software to create technical drawings and plans used by engineers, architects, and construction workers. Their drawings detail the specifications, dimensions, and materials necessary for building everything from machinery to buildings. Drafters often specialize in fields such as architectural, civil, mechanical, or electrical drafting, depending on the industry. They play a crucial role in transforming design concepts into precise, workable diagrams for manufacturing or construction.

Description
Corvant About Us:
At Corvant, we provide specialty HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical services to mission-critical commercial and industrial environments. Our teams support essential facilities across data centers, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, and education.
We deliver end-to-end solutions across the facility lifecycle, including design, prefabrication, installation, controls integration, and ongoing service. As one of the fastest-growing platforms in our space, we are focused on operational excellence, technical expertise, and building a high-performing team.
The Virtual Design Coordination (VDC) Supervisor is responsible for the hands-on, day-to-day leadership of the drafting and design team within the VDC department, ensuring the accurate and timely execution of design, coordination, and pre-construction deliverables for HVAC and plumbing systems on commercial construction projects. Reporting to the VDC Manager, the Supervisor serves as the working leader who translates department strategy into daily execution-overseeing drafting technicians, guiding technical quality, balancing workloads, and ensuring that models, submittals, and coordination drawings meet company standards and project requirements. This role requires strong technical expertise, the ability to mentor and develop staff, and close collaboration with the VDC Manager, Department Coordinator, project managers, and field teams. The core areas of responsibility are listed below, however other duties and responsibilities may be required to meet business needs and objectives.
Requirements
Team Supervision & Leadership:
โ€ข Supervise the day-to-day activities of drafting technicians, providing direction, guidance, and support to ensure tasks are completed accurately and on schedule.
โ€ข Assign and balance workloads across the team in coordination with the VDC Manager and Department Coordinator, adjusting priorities as project demands shift.
โ€ข Serve as the first point of escalation for technical and workflow questions, resolving day-to-day issues and elevating broader concerns to the VDC Manager.
โ€ข Foster a positive, collaborative team environment that supports accountability, growth, and professional development.
Technical Oversight & Quality Control:
โ€ข Review drawings, models, and submittals produced by the drafting team to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards and project specifications.
โ€ข Provide hands-on technical guidance in AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and Bluebeam, modeling best practices and correcting errors before deliverables move forward.
โ€ข Lead clash detection and model coordination efforts, ensuring that conflicts are identified and resolved prior to fabrication and installation.
โ€ข Maintain and enforce drafting standards, templates, and quality control checkpoints across all active projects.
Workflow & Project Coordination:
โ€ข Monitor project timelines and deliverables to ensure that drafting milestones are met and that the team's output aligns with overall project schedules.
โ€ข Coordinate closely with the Department Coordinator on scheduling, resource allocation, and documentation to maintain a smooth and efficient workflow.
โ€ข Ensure that submittals, RFIs, and coordination drawings are prepared, reviewed, and delivered within required timelines.
โ€ข Track the status of assigned projects and provide regular progress updates to the VDC Manager.
Training & Development:
โ€ข Mentor and develop drafting technicians across all levels, helping them build proficiency in design software, company standards, and mechanical systems knowledge.
โ€ข Support the onboarding of new drafting technicians, providing orientation, technical training, and ongoing coaching.
โ€ข Identify individual skill gaps and development opportunities, and partner with the VDC Manager on training plans and advancement pathways.
Collaboration & Communication:
โ€ข Collaborate with project managers, estimators, field supervisors, and other stakeholders to ensure design requirements and project expectations are clearly understood and met.
โ€ข Participate in project and coordination meetings, providing technical input and clarifying design elements as needed.
โ€ข Communicate workload status, risks, and resource needs to the VDC Manager in a timely and proactive manner.
Reporting & Documentation:
โ€ข Ensure that all project documentation, including drawings, models, submittals, and RFIs, is accurate, organized, and properly version-controlled.
โ€ข Provide the VDC Manager with regular updates on team performance, project status, and quality metrics.
โ€ข Help maintain department records and contribute to the continuous improvement of drafting processes and documentation standards.
