What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in downstream process roles?

Professionals in downstream process roles often encounter challenges such as optimizing purification steps to maximize yield and product purity while minimizing costs and processing time. They must also troubleshoot issues related to equipment performance, scalability, and regulatory compliance, especially when transitioning from lab-scale to large-scale production. Collaboration with upstream teams, quality assurance, and engineering is critical to address these challenges and ensure a smooth workflow. Staying current with technological advances and regulatory requirements also plays a significant role in day-to-day success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a downstream process engineer?

To thrive as a Downstream Process Engineer, you need a solid background in chemical or biochemical engineering, knowledge of purification techniques, and typically a relevant degree. Familiarity with process control systems, chromatography, filtration technologies, and GMP compliance, as well as certifications like Six Sigma, are commonly required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you excel in cross-functional teams and address complex production challenges. These skills ensure efficient, high-quality product recovery and compliance with industry standards in biomanufacturing environments.

What is the difference between Downstream Process vs Upstream Process?

AspectDownstream ProcessUpstream Process
PurposePurifies and isolates the target product from the mixtureProduces the initial product, such as cell culture or fermentation
ActivitiesFiltration, chromatography, centrifugation, purificationCell growth, fermentation, media preparation
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, bioprocessing facilitiesBioreactors, fermentation tanks, labs
Required SkillsBioprocessing techniques, chromatography, filtrationMicrobiology, cell culture, fermentation technology

Downstream Process focuses on purifying the product, while Upstream Process involves producing the raw material. Both are essential steps in biopharmaceutical manufacturing, often working sequentially to ensure high-quality product output.

What is a downstream process?

A Downstream Process refers to the series of steps involved in the purification and recovery of biological products, such as proteins, enzymes, or antibodies, after they have been produced by microorganisms or cells during fermentation or cell culture. It typically includes cell separation, product isolation, purification, and polishing to achieve the desired product quality and purity. Downstream processing is crucial for ensuring that biopharmaceutical products meet regulatory and safety standards before they reach the market.

Job description

Neko Preventive Care Physician

Neko is redefining what prevention means, from treating illness when it arrives, to sustaining health before it's ever at risk. Our mission: make data-driven, preventative care accessible to more people, before symptoms appear.

In a single, non-invasive visit under an hour, proprietary technology and direct clinical care combine to deliver personalized, actionable insights. It's a team that thinks in 10x, not 10%. Every role here plays a part in building a world where prevention is the norm, and where your work genuinely helps people live longer, healthier lives.

Physician to deliver Neko's preventive-care model to members in Greater Miami โ€” using advanced, non-invasive technology and clinical expertise to identify health risks early and translate findings into action plans that genuinely change what a member does next. This is a deeply collaborative role at the intersection of clinical excellence, member experience, and a conviction that catching things early changes lives. You'll work closely with Operators, APPs, and cross-functional partners to deliver a seamless, insight-driven member experience.

What You'll Deliver in the First 6โ€“12 Months

  • Comprehensive preventive health screenings delivered using Neko's high-resolution skin imaging, cardiovascular assessments, and AI-powered decision support โ€” with consistent quality across every member visit.
  • Personalized, action-oriented health plans created from screening data, translated into next steps the member actually takes โ€” measured by member follow-through and downstream outcomes.
  • Member education on dermatological and cardiovascular risk factors and lifestyle strategies that lands โ€” measured by how the member felt about the consultation, not just the clinical findings.
  • Clinical oversight and escalation support provided to APPs, raising the bar for clinical quality and team performance across the clinic.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with Operators, APPs, and care teams that improves continuity of care and the end-to-end member experience.

What We're Hiring For

  • Genuine, personal commitment to preventive medicine โ€” not just as a specialism, but as a way of practicing. You think it's wrong that this isn't how everyone practices medicine.
  • Member-first instinct โ€” you take the member experience personally, not just procedurally, and measure a consultation's success by how the member felt, not only by the findings.
  • Team-lifting collaboration โ€” you make the people around you better by showing up consistently, sharing what you know, and caring how the team performs as a whole.

Minimum Requirements

  • Active Florida State medical license.
  • Board certified in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or equivalent.
  • At least 1+ year of post residency experience.
  • Recent outpatient experience (at least a year in the past 5 years).
  • Comfort working in a tech-forward, fast-moving clinical environment.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health, dental, vision, and mental health coverage.
  • Complimentary full Neko scan for you and eligible family members.
  • CME benefit and broad state licensure support.
  • Flexible time off.

About Titles at Neko

We use a simplified internal title framework that prioritizes clarity over hierarchy, so internal titles may differ from market-facing role titles. Scope, impact and level of the role are fully aligned and will be clearly discussed throughout the process.

Hiring Process

Candidates progress from application and structured screening through thoughtfully designed interviews culminating in a formal offer and final pre-employment checks before joining the team.

Equal Opportunity & Inclusion Statement

Neko Health is committed to inclusive hiring and member-first care. We welcome candidates from all backgrounds and encourage you to request reasonable adjustments to support your application.
